Hyundai Tucson scores full 5-stars in BNCAP

The Hyundai Tucson has been crash tested by BNCAP and it has scored a perfect 5-star rating for both adult occupant and child occupant protection. It scored 30.84 / 32.00 points for adult occupants, and 41.00 / 49.00 points for child occupants.

Fabulous.
The < 10000 owners of this generation Tucson can rejoice they are driving a safe car.
The > 1000000 owners of can be happy they drive a car from a manufacturer capable of 5 star cars, knowing theirs might not be a safe vehicle though.

Is this the same model that scored a zero in latin NCAP? If yes, then this shows the difference in testing standards between the various crash testing agencies.

Nevertheless, to my eyes, BNCAP is proving to be useless with each passing days. I will start believing in BNCAP the day they test a car that scores less than 4 stars, or the day they pick a highly relevant model for a crash test.

Re: Hyundai Tucson achieves 5-star rating in BNCAP

It is interesting that it managed 5 stars for child occupant protection just by virtue of its dynamic protection despite not being i-Size (this LWB version is not bound for Europe). A tiny bit less and it would have been 4 stars for children.

I wonder if the diesel is not covered by the rating because of the weight difference or something else.

Indeed the protocols are different but note the 0-star version had 2 airbags and a lap belt in the rear centre seat. Hyundai added 6 airbags, three-point belts and i-Size seats and it received 3 stars. Latin NCAP even tested the ADAS and it performed well, but it wasn't available in all Latin American countries so it didn't receive points. Note that it would have received a 5+5 under the 2016-19 Latin NCAP protocols which BNCAP is largely based on.

Eagerly awaiting the BNCAP results of Maruti Swift and Wagon R. But feel I am likely to wait for a lifetime.

Re: Hyundai Tucson achieves 5-star rating in BNCAP

Good to see the car score a healthy rating. Nevertheless, one wonders what is the motivation behind BNCAP picking a model that sells less than 200 units a month.

It is not clear if this was a voluntary or sponsored crash test. It leads one to assume that either BNCAP is picking cars based on what they can get their hands on or they have some robust lottery system that randomly picks cars.

That being said, being a domestic crash test agency, one expects them to be in touch with what sells well in the country and focus on high-volume models. Hope they align their model choices with sales figures eventually.

Good to see more and more cars score well in the crash test. However, there is no mention of the bodyshell integrity or how the footwell area fared in the test. Are they rated to be stable or unstable? Or am I missing something?

Exactly, something is off with BNCAP. Seems like an attempt to showcase cars for India in good light with regard to safety. BNCAP's Credibility does not flutter high.

Re: Hyundai Tucson achieves 5-star rating in BNCAP

Bogus.

I would suggest BNCAP to actually decide who they're catering to here- those few hundred buyers of Hyundai Tucson or millions of taxpayers whose money you're burning in that institution.

Take 10 most sold cars in India, then check their YT page and compare how many of those 10 cars they've actually bothered to test.

I understand that these tests are voluntary, they only get cars that OEMs are willing to send, which is why I revert back to my original thoughts on this, it's completely useless unless the central government brings in a regulation to make it mandatory for every car in India to pass through BNCAP.

In fact, they should be subjected to BNCAP's minimum regulations before being allowed to sell. Example: Cars above 7 lakh+ (ex-showroom) with detected unstable bodyshell can't be sold in our country.

Please save lives Gadkari Ji. Building expressways with poor quality/engineering left and right won't foster Bharat into a world of progress and prosperity. If you don't want to, then shut it down and stop wasting my money on this.

BNCAP only conducts voluntary tests, Global NCAP and IIHS are private NGOs where they can test cars against the manufacturers will by fundings, but BNCAP is backed by the government and BNCAP is made for manufacturers to show the safety of their cars for consumer info and marketing purposes.

And this is working Maruti also has waken up and started voluntarily sending new cars that perform well. When consumers say 'why so and so car does not have a safety rating?' and competitors have good ratings, manufacturers will take notice and cater to demands which help them increase sales.

All M1 category cars since 2019 have to pass full-frontal impact at 48kph, offset-frontal impact with fixed deformable barrier at 56kph and side impact with a mobile deformable barrier at 50kph before going on sale. BNCAP is beyond the minimum regulation and is aimed to improve crashworthiness.

We cannot have different crash test requirements based on price and other things in the same category, this only gives a chance for manufacturers to find loopholes. Quadracycles category(limitations on top speed and size) is there if manufacturers want to sell small affordable vehicles with more relaxed safety regulations.

Used car market is larger than new car market in terms of volume. So one can buy a 5 year old affordable used car with compliant minimum safety standards. 5-10 years down the line a used car with high BNCAP/GNCAP safety ratings will be much more affordable than a entry level new car.

Hyundai sending their lowest selling car to BNCAP, just why?

Maybe they're not confident on their Creta or Venue scoring well

Both likely remained stable — the indicator is the knees scoring full points. If the passenger compartment had become unstable or the footwell had ruptured, Hyundai would not have been allowed to present sled-test data to contest the knee mapping penalties that are applied when hard objects behind the dash are suspected to compromise the knee protection of drivers of different size or position than those in the test. The Tucson tested by Latin NCAP (also LWB) had such hard points so I have no reason to believe the Indian one wouldn't.

In any case, the passenger compartment and footwell can't both have become unstable, because they are each 1-point penalties and the Tucson has 14.84 out of 16 in the frontal impact.
