Two children died on the spot while 5 died on the way to hospital. Another child died in the hospital. Eleven others including the driver of the Omni have been injured. Some of them are undergoing treatment at the local hospital while others have been rushed to Manipal hospital.

Among the eight dead are six girls and two boys. Three of them have been identified as Nikhita, studying in 7th standard, Calista, a student of LKG, and Ananya, studying in first standard. They were accompanied by teacher Philomena who was also injured.

Apart from Philomena, the other injured have been identified as Omni driver Martin, Deekshith of 4th standard, Vinora of 5th standard, Melissa of 10th standard, Veera of 10th standard, Lisel of 1st standard, Anson of 6th standard, Delvin of UKG, Renvil and Mariya of LKG, Princita of 1st standard, Rosten of 3rd standard, Clarissa of 1st standard, and Alvita of 2nd standard.
Again exposes Omni being used as school transport. Also I counted 18 names, driver & teacher with 16 kids, all crammed in a Omni.

Two completely contrasting practices for the same purpose, which tells us that it's all about priority in most cases.

As for these hooligans, they'll need some serious spanking.

Bangalore Commissioner of Police has set his eye on overloaded school vans.

I believe if the authorities use a ham-handed approach to simply penalise some vans, they may not be able to succeed.

If I remember correctly, last time the city traffic police tried this, there was a strike by taxi unions and parents because many big schools that outsourced their transportation, outright refused to undertake any responsibility saying the vans were independently operating and that educational institutions are neither in the business of transportation nor obligated to provide or manage transport, further they didn't even provide parking to these independent school vans. Eventually after a few days, things went quiet.

Instead, in my opinion, this time a structured approach is required to be created to ensure this phenomena is dealt with aptly. Obviously all parties involved will need to be taken into confidence, else this will remain a temporary scheme to simply collect penalties from these vans.

P.S. : In any case, everyone knows that Omni is (one of) the most vulnerable vehicles often even if only 4+1 passengers travel & it crashes at 64kmph (the speed at which G-NCAP does crash tests). That said, I haven't seen seat belts in buses either.
