Its really very simple. Fog lamps used during non-fog days are illegal and a big irritant. As most present cars come with rear fogs as well, lighting up the front fogs automatically turns them on as well, thereby irritating the drivers at the back.

If only we had better policing like the west, people will respect the law.

The alternator DOES power the electricals of the car!
When the engine is off, the battery powers them.

Please take a look at this detailed thread:

In the world of scientific fact, there are no two truths! There is only one!

We'll see who has the last laugh about this!

It is the alternator that feeds the electricals of a running car. The battery feeds when the engine is off!

Given a choice between annoying some and saving the lives of myself and suicidal pedestrians, I choose the latter. Till all the roads in india are well lit, and all pedestrians become disciplined, its a necessary evil

Ya... right!
Given a choice, I WILL annoy someone.
Given a choice, I WILL consider any and all all actions by me to be life-saving for myself.
Given a choice, I WILL ask the other fellow to stop annoying me while I irritate him.
Given a choice, I WILL consider all pedestrians to be suicidal.
Given a choice, I WILL compromise others' safety while not compromising my own.
Given a choice, I WILL break rules when there's no policeman breathing down my neck.
Given a choice, I would rather not have any rules at all.

everyone, can we please be a little more considerate to others too? When will our "blind-me-blind-you" one-upmanship end? I am sure the people driving in UK are not wrong - they have some logic when they set the rules about fog lamp use.

greenhorn, this is NOT anything personal. It's just that I feel very strongly about the unjustified use of fog/auxiliary driving lamps.

In my view headlights provide visibility and safety during night driving. Fog Lamps provide light during fog. It is best used when you have fog. It is not to be used when there is no fog. It is illegal in some countries to use fog lamps when there is no fog. So we should take cue from the same and should not use fog lamps when there is no fog.

I also notice people here talk of doing things there own way. someone has even commented on taking care of his/her own safety and compromising the safety of other drivers/pedestrians. This is totally against driving principles. Best driving is defensive driving. Defensive driving focuses on safety of one and all. I seem to look like I am an idealist professing gyan out here but we need to be aware that only we (Drivers) are responsible to ensure safety of passengers and other road users.

No issues. I justify the use of the foglamps by asessing the cost and the benefits.
Lets see

Cost: a bit of power to run them, a bit of annoyance to folks on the other side
Benefit: More safety for me, More safety for those who I might not otherwise see in the dark and might choose to stray onto my path.

I feel it is worth doing. Let me re emphasise that I DO NOT wish to compromise on anyone's safety. I have never been blinded or my visiblity compromised by anyone else using a fog lamp, and I assume it is similar for most people.

Again, I dont approve of unjustified use of foglamps - in well lit city streets etc. Can you clarify on what you mean by unjustified use ?

May I draw your attention to page 19 of the following Transport Ireland document: http://www.transport.ie/upload/general/8342-0.pdf, and I quote:
• Fog lamps may only be used in dense fog or falling snow. In clear weather conditions they are liable to cause glare or dazzle and must be turned off.
• While high mounted rear brake lights are permitted, the fitting of other non-obligatory lamps is controlled by law. [Note: This includes auxiliary driving lamps. SS-T]

LOL, those are rules for civilized countries!

Reminds me of a joke from yesteryears when the Italians used to be very rash on the roads.
This Italian in Britain gets into the driver's seat for his driving test.
First thing he does is to pluck off the RVM and toss it out the window, muttering, "What's behind me does not matter"!!

Even the land of the Maoris have very rigid rules (much the same as UK rules). Take a look at this page:

Get your lights right

LOL, because the Maoris, like the Red Indians (and I'm sure many others), are not in charge of their native lands! New Zealand is rather British!

Can you imagine being put into a 'reservation' in your own land?

All copied from old British manuals and books!

Question is, what did we do with all of it?!

...and, "where do we go from here", as my friends Guns N Roses asked!!

Guys. Guys.

I believe we should be prescribing what is good, what is the best practice and what has been followed well in developed countries in this forum. Breath analyzers were unheard of 5 years ago in India and Laser Gun speed detectors a decade back. When we are adopting best practices from the developed countries we in this forum should practice and preach what is good and tested elsewhere.
