I'm not blaming the road, but the cops could do something to stop people making those illegal u-turns. If not, this sort of mishaps will continue to happen.

hey chill, I used your message in quotes to talk about this accident. was talking about the blasting from media who start calling such projects as failures. agree with you that since people donot follow discipline, high time more restrictions are placed before some moron comes and bangs some innocent person by their actions.

The authorities should have completed both side of the sealink before throwing it open.

Yes, one side is still under construction which is why the other side is being used for two-way traffic

Now they should close the whole thing down, complete the other side too and then open it. Atleast accidents like this one and headon collisions will be reduced.

No guarantees on anything else given the way we drive.

Is it true that the two cars that met with accident on Bandra Worli sea link one was numbered 666 and the other 777? What a co-incidence.

The point is that some of the design is faulty. The lane width should be a little more IMO and most important - placement of those silly dividers. Why can they not place them in such a manner that it is not possible to take a U turn? The authorities have not learnt at all from the fabia-wr accident - keep on harping on CCTV.

In India we have huge strides to take when it comes to designing safe roads, segregation of different types of traffic, signage, etc. e.g. to prevent wrong way driving on highways at strategic points they can always install one way spike strips - voila no more trucks (or two wheelers) with blinding headlights coming the wrong way at you in the fastest lane demanding right of way.

^^
Point bang on. The dividers put there on the sea link suck big time.
Someone can just push / slide them at will.

They need to put something which is fixed and screwed up with no gaps.

And put in some temporary small speed breakers also.

the cars involved in accident of the BWSL; Lancer and Accord, As per the news, the man in Lancer forgot something at the airport, and hence tried to make an illegal U turn and the accord collided with the Lancer at the back.

Accidents on the Bandra Worli Sea Link in Mumbai-bs.jpg

As i have seen/traveled on the BWSL; Their are 4 lanes for either side of commuting. However only 1 of the lanes is being currently used, with the other one still under construction. And this 1 lane has 4 sublanes; 2 for UP and 2 for Down, and split by a small divider as shown.

Any speeding vehicle will easily takeover the other lane's traffic ;if it goes out of control.

For those who cannot view video, here's the linky to the story on ndtv website

And a marginally more detailed one on times now.

The sealink seems to be a regular accident hotspot now.

Speed Breakers and completely chain-linked dividers seem to be the only solutions to curb accidents on this bridge. Safety is paramount and people don't seem to realize how 'dangerous' is to drive on such an elevated road, with partial dividers. 'Ignorance' is the main cause of such accidents. Speedcams and cops are grossly useless here. People must be made to realize by installing danger signs and speed breakers that any mistake, they could go off the bridge resulting in fatalities.

Speed Breakers on a bridge? I don't think so! The whole idea of the bridge is to ensure smooth flow of traffic. What should be done is people who're breaking the law must be fined a huge amount. When I say a huge amount, I mean HUGE! And if they can't cough it up, they should be produced before a Judge and sent to prison for a day or more! That will solve the problem. People will immediately start following rules. And this is applicable everywhere! Not just Mumbai.

People think rules are meant to be broken. They don't realize that they're formulated and implemented for their own safety and welfare. When people take law into their hands, they should be punished severely. And it should be so severe that they would never forget it!

EDIT: Maybe the authorities should introduce the 'points' system (Eg. Europe, Singapore, Qatar). It might work. There is not much to lose anyway!

Yep I think it had just happened when I was crossing the Sea Link this morning. Black old Zen (facelift) crushed to the core. The second car was towed away before I got there I guess.Third accident in 10 days. Not good.

The biggest problem here is that there are people taking illegal U-Turns on the bridge. If the authorities do not want to build a concrete divider, they should use something like they do during Ganpati immersion - drums filled with water and a thick rope in between them. Serves as a divider and no can take a U-Turn.

The idea here is in being proactive, and not reactive; atleast on a temporary basis.

Temporary speed breakers, like a long length of those strips that they put before the toll nakas should also be put at intermittant distances on the bridge. It will maintain smooth flow of traffic, but for most part people wont attempt going above 50-60 kmph with these on.

More important that that is the dividers between opposite directions. Wonder what is taking them so long to figure out that they need to put something strong, fixed, absolutely unmovable, end-to-end as dividers.

The plastic thing that is there right now is a joke, a bad one at that. A kid could push and shove it around.

There seems signages shown as '50' that means allowed speed limit on the bridge is
50kmph, but how many listen to this. And such an open way/route how the cop can impliment any speed limit? Install camera's and catch the offenders but then you need 24 hours surveillance - Is it possible?
