One source tells me that:If the Overall diameter of the wheel is maintained at +/- 3%, ABS works well.
Somewhere on here, i read that ABS works till a difference of 20% on the OD.

Nitrous - The acceptable percentage of OD variation is actually +2 to -3%.

according to my logic ABS should work better on upsized tyres as they are rotating at a lower RPM when compared to stock wheels. This of course will only happen when there is a positive difference between upsized wheel & stock wheel.

A lot of discussion can be based on perception but here are the facts about ABS:

- Four-wheel ABS is a safe, effective braking system when used properly. It offers an important safety advantage by preventing the wheels from locking during emergency braking situations, allowing drivers to maintain control over steering and operate vehicles more effectively. To take full advantage of the maximum safety benefits drivers must learn how to operate their anti-lock brake systems correctly.

- Drive safely, because your anti-lock brakes are only as good as the driver using them. Anti-lock brakes cannot compensate for driving faster, more aggressively, or maintaining unsafe following distances. They cannot guarantee recovery from a spin or skid prior to an emergency braking situation. Avoid extreme steering maneuvers while your anti-lock brake system is engaged.

- Always "brake and steer" when using four-wheel anti-lock brakes. With ABS, all you have to do is "brake and steer". With four-wheel ABS, push the brake pedal while steering normally and keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal until the car comes to a complete stop. Don't take your foot off the brake pedal or pump the brakes, because that will disengage the anti-lock system.

- Remember that you can steer while you are braking with four-wheel anti-lock brake systems. Steer clear of hazards while keeping your foot firmly on the brake pedal. Be aware that your vehicle will not turn as quickly on a slippery road as it would on dry pavement.

- Know that there is a difference between four-wheel and rear-wheel ABS. Four-wheel ABS prevents wheel lock on all four wheels giving the driver improved control over steering. Drivers of four-wheel ABS cars should step firmly on the brake in an emergency stopping situation and keep their foot on the pedal.

- Expect noise and vibration in the brake pedal when your anti-lock brakes are in use. These sensations tell you the ABS system is working properly.

Anti-lock Braking systems were developed to reduce skidding and maintain steering control when brakes are used in an emergency situation. Remember that ABS brakes do not help you stop quicker under most conditions. They do help you maintain steering control during braking so you can veer around obstacles.

And NO I am not talking perception here, most of these tips are taken from the National Safety Council

Do Swift & Getz (ABS versions) have 2-wheel ABS or 4-wheel ABS?

I kind of recall reading that these cars have ABS on the front wheels only? Can some owners confirm please?

ABS is on all wheels 4 wheels on SWIFT.

AFAIK it has 3 channel ABS 2 for front and 1 for the rear. Most cars have 3 channel until and unless it is OPTRA lol.

But i could be wrong !!!

Getz Prime website says it has got ABS on front wheels. What does it do compared to ABS on 4 wheels?

I think a short course should be provided on how to steer the ABS equipped car on emergency. Otherwise, the utility value of the ABS itself is lost.

Swift has 2 channel 4 wheel ABS. One channel controls front left and right rear wheels and the other controls front right and rear left wheels.

I don't think there is any special technique to steering with ABS.

It gives you a better chance, that's all. And if the 'obstruction' suddenly in the road is soft and human, it gives them a better chance too.

Alternative is to take a course on how to handle and recover from a skid, the best part of which should be how to drive so that you never do! Except, of course, for a wheel-locked straight-line skid to a halt in a non-ABS car.

All these techniques only get used in emergencies, and, the better we drive, the fewer the emergencies --- so the less the practice.

Any skid rinks in India where one can learn these things?

That sounds logical L_B_M. there's a rare chance that the front right and rear left will both lose grip. So this way the front has 2 independant channels.

Also there is a probability that the left side of teh car might be going over oil/water and may lose grip. this arrangement again gives the left and right individual control.

Sounds good.
