Coorg to Ponicherry

Hi All,
Am planning a visit to coorg next week. Have also realised that a trip to ponicherry has to be done. rather than come back to Bombay and go again, I was wondering if there is a route that can take me from Coorg to pondicherry? I have a car. Any idea if I can bypass the mad Bangalore traffic and save time?
Thanks,
Clix

Re: Coorg to Ponicherry

From Coorg you should come all the way towards Bangalore until you reach the NICE Jn. which is well marked. Take the NICE Peripheral road all the until you reach Hosur Road which you will join near Electronic City. From here its straight forward on NH 7 until Krishnagiri. Take a deviation to NH46 (marked as Chennai).

Now comes the difficult part as the road between Krishnagiri - Tiruvannamalai is pretty bad so you may have to come all the way upto Kanchipuram get into the town find your way towards Chengalpattu. You can continue onwards to Pondicherry by either taking the NH45 via Tindivanam or go through ECR by joining ECR near Mahabalipuram. You can find all details in this thread which is regularly updated.

Re: Coorg to Ponicherry

Yes you can drive from Coorg to Pondicherry

Alternatives

You can take this route through Mysore and Salem

Alternative 2 through Chamrajnagar and salem

Alternative 3 and most scenic through 3 National Parks and Ooty

Hope you enjoy the journey at the least as Pondy does not have much to offer in this season and is going to be hotest

Re: Coorg to Ponicherry

Do note what @Srikant mentions is the best route, but we are talking in excess of 650Km to be covered. So you need to start early.

From where in Coorg you plan to start? Is it Madeikeri?
If yes, the road is straight as @Srikant said.

- Come down till Mysore using the Hunsur road (I think SH88, Very good 2L)
- Use the Outer Ring Road at Mysore to take the Bangalore Road (SH 17, 4L).
- Get on to NICE road (4L) to hit NH7 (GQ) (Hosur road)
- Go below the second flyover after the Krishnagiri toll plaza on NH7 to take NH46 (GQ)
- Drive till Kanchipuram. Get into the town. Ask for the SH to Chengalpattu.
- Drive to Chengalpattu and latch on to NH45 (GQ) towards Trichy.
- At Tindivanam branch of to Pondicherry on to NH66 (4L again!)

+1 to PYPKMSrikanth. NICE road makes it a breeze to bypass Bangalore. Well almost and you can drive throughout without asking anyone.

There is another interesting route that goes thru country side. This is Madikeri-Mysore-Bannur-Malavalli-Kanakapura-Krishnagiri-Pondy. This route has been discussed recently in the thread Chennai-Kanakapura avoiding Bangalore. This route atleast till Krishnagiri would be lush green due to recent rains and with minimal traffic, though the road conditions can't be compared with the first one.

RamP!
