Don't about the road condition but yes, the sunset view is awesome from this place.

Slightly off Sringeri (about 16-odd kms), there is a sunset point and the view stretches far off. This point is at the top of the hill and a long-winding ghat starts off from the point. (If you take this road, you'll get to Karkala and then Manipal-Udupi).

So, you can watch the sun set into the mountains over a long horizon.

PS : I have tons of pictures of this place but wouldn't want to spoil it for you.

Two lesser known places:
1. The lighthouse at Honavar: turn off NH17 at the main Honavar junction, go up the slope to the hospital at the top. The lighthouse is inside the hospital compound, and there's ample parking space. This lighthouse is just a few years old unlike Kaup lighthouse which has completed a decade and a century. Visitors are allowed inside from 5 pm till the light is switched on.

2. Mouth of the Kali river: turn off NH17 towards the sea, just south of the toll booth at the Kasarkod end of the Kali river bridge. This road takes you through a village to an almost deserted beach, a long narrow spit of sand flanked on one side by the sea and on the other side by the river, with fishing boats coming and going through the river mouth. Don't be deterred by a small patch of road that's been concreted on one side only and looks like it might not be motorable The road to the beach continues for quite some distance beyond.

I'll post a couple of photos of these places later (evening/night).

If you reach Kumta early, you may want to visit 16th century Mirjan fort. I haven't been there, but read about it in a kannada weekly a few months ago. Apparently its a beautiful place, though deserted. A quick google search pointed me to these two blogposts with some photos and a video.

Idagunji temple would be closed after lunch for a couple of hours (guess b/w 1 and 3PM). Please check the timings and plan accordingly.

This is my nearly finalized itinerary, not perfect, but the best I could think of

Bangalore - Thirthahalli - Kuppali - Thirthahalli
Thirthahalli - Kundadri - Sigandoor - Thirthahalli
Thirthahalli - Sagar - Kargal - Kogar - Bhatkal - Idagunji - Kumta
Kumta - Yana - Gokarna ( time permitting ) or Sirsi Marikamba- Murudeshwara
Murudeshwara - Honnavar - Sagar - Thirthahalli - Balehonnur
Balehonnur - Horanadu - Kottigehara - Mudigere - Hassan - Madikeri
I strongly recommend not to return to Murdeshwara from Sirsi. You will unnecessarily be travelling back.

Why dont you either stay in Sirsi (there are some good home stays) I spotted these two but have not stayed.
Bakula Home Stay: at Sirsi, Uttara Kannada
Homestays in Sirsi — Vanastree Vanstree is an NGO which is doing good work in the area.

OR try this Rural toursim in Banavasi which is closeby
Banavasi- Endogenous rural tourism site, Karnataka, India

Banavasi which was the capital of Kadambas has famous temple.

After Banavasi, drive down to Tirthahalli via Sorab and Sagar. On the way you can vsist Gudavi Bird sanctuary (I am not sure whether you were able to do this last time).

When in Sagar, dont forget to vsist beautiful Aghoreshwara temple at Ikkeri which is on outskirts. ikkeri - Google Search
