New York - What to see / do there?

Hello fellow Bhpian's

I'm planning a trip to NY during the long weekend here in the US.
Looking for some help on what are the must see places around here. We have 4 days with us, the plan for now is just NY and Atlantic City.

Upon looking in google, the places worth visiting includes a bunch of Museums, and am not a big fan of them and dont remember visiting any in my life. So it will be greatly helpful to know on what to expect in the museums and is it worth it?

And yea, pls suggest some must eat places for NY style pizzas and Bagels

re: New York - What to see / do there?

my favs:

1. stroll in times square in evening until midnight.
2. half day at lady liberty's statue. (if you stay in NJ, better to park in NJ side and take the ferry)
3. empire state bldg if you are interested.
4. brooklyn bridge if you are interested.
5. intrepid sea airport museum.
6. stroll in central park in daytime especially if its weekend and sunny.
7. madam tussads (in times square)
8. EDIT: Museum of natural history is good, but not worth a cross country flight IMHO.

BTW, atlantic city can easily be done by buses that leave from port authority bus station, especially if you wish to drink and not have to drive.

re: New York - What to see / do there?

Must do
- Take the 4 rides - uptown, downtown, brooklyn & boat ride. Each is about 3-4 hours.
- Visit American Natural History Museum (absolute must, don't go by its museum tag & Spare 5-6 hours atleast!)
- Liberty cruise
- Empire State Building & Evening at Times Square.
- For Pizza - Grimaldi's Pizza near Brooklyn Bridge, no address required, walk down the bridge towards the promenade untill you see a long queue outside a shop.

re: New York - What to see / do there?

New York is a walkers paradise.
Everyday there is something new to discover in the streets.
A few "unmissables"
1. Central Park - stroll
2. Grand Central Station
3. Liberty Cruise (The evening one)
4. Times Square and the various shops around it.
5. Brooklyn bridge.
6. Empire State Building - Go to the observatory on top. Preferably in the evening.
7. BAGELS !!

If you have visited Las Vegas or intend to visit it, Atlantic City can be given a miss. Otherwise, best to take greyhounds from port authority. They have some schemes too for casinos.
What about DC and Niagara ?

re: New York - What to see / do there?

Others have covered important places to see in NY/Manhattan area.

If you are interested in stage shows, Broadway (near times square) is the place for you. You can also see Madamme Tussads if you haven't seen it in other cities.

Wall Street is also another place to walk around. And nearby WTC memorial ( it was under renovation when i went last and i guess its still going on) if you are interested.

Two things I would like to add -

1) Stroll on Wall Street (pics with the 'Bull')
2) Pastrami Sandwich at Carnegie Deli, Times Square.

re: New York - What to see / do there?

Heres a list of what you can do.

1. For a start, the best way to explore NY is you can take the City Tours. One good company is City Sights NY and then there is also another tour agency
2. You can get tickets for these services online or all through 7th Ave, from madison garden onwards. There are agents selling them and has different options to suit your needs. Uptown, Downtown and Harbour Cruise. Make sure you take the one that has the Circle Line cruise included.
3. Times Square is a good place to hang around till late night as well, and is constantly alive.
4. Then Battery Park, Financial District, Ground Zero (though nothing great to see there) and the vicinity
5. If you are interested in a zoo, central park has a great one

These are what I can think of right now

re: New York - What to see / do there?

Well people have suggested a packed schedule for 3-4 days, but if you can, for a night - watch a show in the theater district or a broadway show, have a bite in kati roll, couple of drinks in greenwich village, and party in the desi clubs in hell's kitchen - worth it!

Yes we did think of DC, but wondering if it would be too much of a travel.

Eating out in NY

El Tambo | Authentic Peruvian Cuisine

These guys are based in Ossining, NY (USA), and make a delicious range of sea-food dishes and salads. I believe Peru is known for its wholesome soups as well and these are featured ...
Before you ask, I've never been there BUT their website and Menu and logo and things were designed by buddies in Bangalore!

Re: Eating out in NY

I can tell you about everything except Indian food.
My 3 biggest favourites:
Ghenet (Ethiopian)
A Brazilian joint on 46th and 5th.
There used to be a Tunisian joint on 52nd and 3rd, which I used to frequent. Don't know if it is still there. It was neither very popular nor very cheap, but I used to like their food.

I would give a thumbs down to Utsav, never liked it. btw if somebody is coming from India on a short trip to NY, why on earth do you want to eat Indian food (no offence meant, but thats just me)... There are lot of great brazilian, mexican, ethiopian and other such food joints here, try them out plss.

Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Spent almost five days in the greatest city on earth, NY, with a short trip to Scranton in-between. Took me 5 minutes to get adjusted there, came back and the moment I entered the terminal my heart broke upon realizing that my mortal eternity lies here.. internally I cried for 48 hours until I re-adjusted to the toxic environment and 1000 people per sq.inch density.

The utter lack of good food options (for vegetarians), the general dislike of Indians by local populace (I dont blame them) and the Donald.. the three greatest obstacles for me from attaining utopia.

I'm back to the white-topping, high-beam city with a 100 quintillion motorcycles and people that make New Yorkers seem friendly by a mile.

Hello there Dark Knight !

I stayed in Stamford city which is about 1 hour from New York city for close to 2 & half years and used to visit New York very frequently. Myself being a vegetarian, I always found the options in any type of restaurants - Indian, Italian, Ethiopian, Thai or Middle east cuisines and road side food carts as well or quick bites like Taco Bell/Chipotle. The only place where I did not find vegetarian was in steak houses. Hope you visited Lexington Avenue or Jackson Heights where there will be lot of Indian food options - pure vegetarian too

Finding a pure vegetarian is a difficult thing

And regarding general dislike of Indians, I agree with that too. Specially some of the younger generation there, look down upon Indians but out of my 3 and half years of stay in US in different cities, never faced anything in particular.
