I agree.
The best time to visit Jog falls would be in the month of August. Linganmakki would be full and then they would let the water flow to falls.

If you want to stay close to Jog, then try this nice home stay called Muthuga. There are no hotels in Jog and if you have contacts can stay in KPC guest house.

Stay@matthuga :: Home Stay Near Jog Falls - Sagar, Jog Falls Holiday, Jog Falls Hotels, Resort Near Jog Falls, Accommodation Near Jog Falls, Lodging Near Jog Falls

If you don't want to stay in any home stay, then the only resort kind of facility is Vihangama in Tirthahalli. The distance from tirthahalli to Jog is 100 KMs which is a nice two hour drive. Here is the link.

.:: Vihangama ::.

Sagar will have very basic lodges and i don't recommend.

There's one hotel by name Vradashree . Though I haven't stayed in Hotel Varadashree in Sagara, I have had breakfast here. It was quite good.

Some reviews abt the same

But most of the govt officials on visit to jog stay here so sometimes its occupied...

Fauji,
Last time stayed in Hotel Jewel Rock in Shimoga en route to my visit to Jog Falls.Believe Shimoga to Jog Falls is around the same distance you have mentioned.
Have a query, would you know the place where the rocks are uniquely sculpted by the river? Remember being there when i was a studying primary school kid. It has made its appearance in a couple of ol Kannada Songs. Not quite sure if you got what am trying to explain? Believe its in and around Banavasi, there was a nice travelogue in the Deccan Herald but the paper cutting is missing quite mysteriously :(

Hope you are referring to YANA,
if it's the same then I'm sure it's not sculpted because of the river.
Check here for more info
Yana, India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you are particular about the rocks sculpted by river, then it should be Khandya and it's near Chikmagalur.
Nice place .
More info

I'm not able to find a pic of it, I shall let you know if i come across

Edit - Find the pics here

MK and Sushrutha,

This place may be SHALMALA which is near Sirsi. Check this link.

Sahasra Linga , A place in western ghats where hundreds of Lingas are carved in stone in Shalmala River in North kanara - dreamroutes.org

I remember reading this in Kannada newspaper some time back.

Lohith he was referring to the rock formation in a river so St Mary's island is totally ruled out.
