On the major highways? Probably not.

I am yet to hear something like that happening on NH 31 for the past 3-4 years. I myself do Patna-Purnea between 12-1 am to 5-6 am. You avoid jaywalkers, cyclists and cattle. Relatively stress free.

I don't agree with the safety on NH31 in Nitish Kumar's Bihar. My car has been seized by cops near Purnea and more cops extorted money from me at Khagaria on the Dalkola-Purnea-Begusarai sector. After these incidents, these were also directly reported to IG of Police Bihar. I will not recommend anyone to travel on these roads, after my personal experiences.

How many years back? Day or Night?

Next time please do let me know whenever you are passing. On what account did they ask for & how much?

Surprisingly we are never stopped by any cops while coming from Patna or Siliguri.

Apr 2009, general elections.
Cops at Purnea wanted to seize my Scorpio for election duty at 12 midnight. After putting up a fierce discussion where I had to trot out some "pedigrees", they reluctantly let me go since I was adamant about who I am!
Cops near Kagariya just wanted some money, they extorted Rs 1200 from me.

Cops do seize private UV's for election duty even from high profile people. Cars are spared. Else from autos to buses to trucks, everything is confiscated.

Khagaria? hmmm.

re: Bangalore - Shillong - Bhutan : Route Queries

Hi Holyghost,

All the best for the trip-will be doing it with my wife-Bangalore to Meghalaya to attend a wedding on 02 Dec 11 so the wife said lets drive. Will be following the AP-OR-WB (skirting Cal as been there numerous times)-NH2-NH 60-NH 34-0nto Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok-Bhutan-Guahati-Meghalaya-a round trip of 25 days. Follow HVKs advice-correct to the 'T'!! This will be our third long trip this year-did MH,GJ,RJ,Daman in Feb 11 (5800kms) , AP and OR in Apr 11 (3500kms) again to attend a wedding. The wife is hooked onto long drives. All the best for yours-if you do it before us I will contact you for the road conditions as it will be real time.

Hi,
As I said before, my idea is to do NH31 (and a few other NHs in Eastern India) end to end in one go. Something like the GQ run which is so much in vogue nowadays. So local knowledge would be useful.

Well, September is when I make a Cal - N. Bengal trip. And tell myself for the next couple of months Never Again.

Was thinking NH6 - NH33 - NH31 this time.

re: Bangalore - Shillong - Bhutan : Route Queries

One interesting road between Siliguri and Behrampur could be:

Day 1: Siliguri-Purnia-Bhagalpur-Dumka-Masalia-kundahit-Nala-Asansol-Ragunathpur-Balrampur-Jamshed Pur (650 Kms)
Day 2: Jamshedpur-Kendujar-Nayagarh-Behrampur (580Kms)

This april I had traveled between Bhagalpur and Asansol (State Highways) using above route. The road and drive was excellent with minimum traffic.

One can also cover Deogarh (Baidynadham) and Basukinath by taking small detour.

re: Bangalore - Shillong - Bhutan : Route Queries

Currently the road between Calcutta to Dalkola is in shambles & shall continue to remain in the same state of disrepair till October-November.

Dumka route is the one to take. Nowadays, most from our part are going to Deoghar and most go upto Dakshineswar (Calcutta). They take the same route back (Bhagalpur-Dumka) instead of the usual NH 34 (Malda-Krishnanagar or Rampurhat-Panagarh, Durgapur) route.

Hi!

Please let me know as to what details you need and from where to where.

I can provide details between Calcutta - Purnea via Tarkeshwar temple. (This route was completed on 20th July on a Motorcycle)

Shall post details as soon as I get them.

Most are frequenting that route because of Deoghar Shrawani mela http://www.babadham.org/

Did not get it correctly. Is that a better option, to travel to Dumka from Kolkata and then move towards Dalkhola, considering the pathetic condition of NH 34? How many KM will it be? Is it a four lane divided highway throughout?
