Planning a trip from Guwahati - Bangalore (first half of September'11)
Tentative schedule as of now:
Day 1: Guwahati - Siliguri : Would love to get updates on the road condition? Whether to take the Boxirhat route ( I guess the perrenial traffic jam is still there) / Srirampur route?
Day 2: Siliguri - Asansol/Durgapur : Its flexible as of now, some stay options would be appreciated. Also which route is the fastest?
Day 3: Asansol/Durgapur - Varanasi : Again flexible if a better night halt option is more feasible
Day 4: Varanasi - Jaipur : Stay options again?
Day 5: Jaipur - Ahmedabad
Day 6: Ahmedabad : have some work
Day 7: Ahmedabad - Pune
Day 8: Pune : Meeting friends
Day 9: Pune - Bangalore

Would love to get all tips / suggestions so as to fine tune the plan. Any input will be highly appreciated.

Other details:
Car : Skoda Laura 1.8 TSi
Drivers: 2

Well I dont see any updates from anyone, guess I ll stick with the schedule and keep you guys posted. I shall try to start a LIVE travelogue.
Cheers!

Robi - The stretch after Dalkola upto Rampur-hat is very bad. It shall take twice the time. Please do bear that in mind and keep it a bit flexible.

For Guwahati to Siliguri, it is suggested to take the Krishnai-Dudhnai-Goalpara-Chapar-Gauripur-Tufanganj-Buxiarhat route. The Bongaigaon-Sri Rampur route is in bad shape. I will be traversing the same route on my way to Delhi soon.

Thanks Sheel for the update
Sumit, are you sure about that, cause the Boxirhat hat route is always choc a bloc with traffic

Robi,

a) How come you are not keeping any day in Varanasi and Jaipur for exploring city? Is this intentional?

b) If not i would highly recommend atleast one full day in these places.

c) Try Hotel Ganges View in Varanasi and Diggi Palace in Jaipur. Very good.

d) In Ahmedabad don't miss dinner in Agashye restuarant in House of MGs.

Yes I am sure about this. Spoke with a lot of truckers too. The Boxiarhat route is the one to take.

Sumit, thanks for the information

You're going in September? I can update you with first hand information about this route in about 10 days.

I'd highly recommend the Hotel Saneer in Jaipur. Its a new property just next to the Clarks Amer (which is not recommended at all), near the Jaipur Airport. If you're approaching from the NH 11- shouldnt be a problem finding it at all.

Also, while you're at Jaipur- I'd strongly recommend heading over to Niros for their famous 'laal maas' (if you're non-vegetarian that is) :)

Thanks Sumit..that would be really helpful. I guess Guwahati - Siliguri and eventually onto Durgapur is the toughest part of the journey. Hence, any update on the current road status is always welcome

Arjya, thanks for the stay tip..I am trying to fit in one more day in Jaipur, just to savor the local sights and flavors. As for 'laal maas', I am a die hard non veg, so shouldn't be a problem.

The route is almost fixed till Ahmedabad..just thinking if I can tweak the next night halt to some place other than Pune as I have an extra day at my disposal. Any ideas?

Am at Delhi after a grueling 2300 kms drive done over 3 days. The Guwahati-Siliguri road via Goalpara-Chapar-Gauripur-Cooch Behar is a torture. After Gauripur, we come across craters as deep and wide as the surface of the moon in and around Cooch Behar. After crossing Jalpaiguri, and before entering Siliguri, these craters become wells, large and deep enough for storage of water! Here, I managed only 8 kms. in 90 minutes, on a Safari! Post thSiliguri, roads were good up to Begusarai with a few small stretches of bad roads, due to flooding, post Nowgachia, Bihar. I lost my enthusiasm between Barauni and Gaya as the roads are lonely and one starts feeling exhausted. However, once you get on G. T. Road from Dobhi, the roads are butter smooth and you start enjoying the drive.

A special mention of Sheel here. Thank you man! I am indebted for life.

I am to make the return trip in about 10 days and am now wondering which route to take for the Siliguri to Guwahati stretch. I am not going via Cooch Behar.

@Robi: I hope this answers your query. Don't do the Boxiarhat route. Its hell. Which other route were you talking about?

Thanks a lot Sumit!
