Aravind,

I am also planning a drive to Velankanni in the month of March.

My plan is to start around 3 - 4 am from Chennai . Take NH 45 to Thindivanam. Not comfortable traveling in the ECR in the wee hours knowing the risks in this route. From Thindivanam go to Pondy and then take ECR to reach Velankanni. By this time it would have dawned and will be good to drive. This should take around 7 hours to reach. Follow the same route back by starting on Sunday after lunch from Velankanni.

I was looking at Seagate group of hotels and resorts for accommodation . I dont have a personal experience in this hotel.

Please update after you complete the trip. It will be useful for me.

I agree Harsh, But the oveall difference is about 40km. So I was thinking,
if that extra distance helps bypass Pondycherry and Cuddalore why not?

It doesn't. Here you have to cross Virudhachalam and the roads between Virudhachalam and Chidambaram is very bad. Also it not much difficult to cross Pondicherry as the road from Tindivanam directory joins ECR and it hardly takes 15 min to cross the City traffic through crossing Cuddalore is a pain and it also takes about 10 - 15 min.

Unfortunately, the situation is still the same. I did this stretch by bus day before yesterday, as flights out of Jodhpur were cancelled, and all of us attending a conference took a bus to Jaipur to take connecting flights to our destination yesterday morning (Bangalore for me.)

The roads from Jodhpur-Barr-Beowar are two laned and well paved. The road widening from there on all the way to Kishangarh makes the road pretty terrible, especially when bypassing Ajmer. The six-laner on the last 96 Kms towards Jaipur more than makes up for the bad stretches and is a fantastic stretch. First ever trip to Rajasthan - despite the roads, will go back - what a wonderful part of our country!!!

Re: The mega "Road Updates" thread

While looking at Google maps, I see a road which goes from Bamnoli to Mahabaleshwar.
Any idea about the status of this road?

This gives a good idea of visiting Kaas/Bamnoli and continuing to Mahabaleshwar without turning back.

Here is route : link

Re: The mega "Road Updates" thread

B'lore - Pune : We'd traveled from B'lore to Pune last sunday (1st July). The highway, as usual, is wonderful to drive on. Diversions are very few and well indicated. Majority of the highway while in Karnataka is extremely good; with sparse traffic. However, it is absolute chaos once you cross Karad. There are umpteen 2-wheelers and SUVs driving at ~120+. And they all have some party symbol on their reg. plates. It took us 15 hours with a max. speed of 100 km/hr and a total of 2 hours of break. Total toll is Rs. 572.

Pune - Aurangabad is a pleasure to drive on now! Every bit of the highway is now 4-laned with a divider throughout so you can really cruise. The only lousy part is that there isn't a bypass for Ahmednagar yet. We took about 4.5 hours for Aundh - CIDCO N-3. Total toll about Rs. 180.

You will get standard updates on roads up to Allahabad (GT Road).
Check with seasoned travelers to Kolkatta from Delhi (e.g. @SST).

Also about the latest on Yamuna expressway so that you can get to use it if its opened when you make your journey.

Its only the Mirzapur section which you need to check for latest updates.

Do note that the E-way is opening on Aug 9th. ( I just saw in papers.)
Do check that aspect too.

Right - i also saw this, but the question is - being in Gurgaon, does it make sense for me to goto Greater NOIDA to get on this expressway or go take the normal route that i would have take otherwise -

Gurgaon - Sohna - Palwal - Agra?

I think its a difference of 40km. (I am not the right person to answer this though)

My only thought was if you can cover that distance to Noida early morning, you may
still gain, because then you dont need to go through Mathura and Agra, which are a significantly time consuming to cross.

Maybe others can comment on this as well.

Why do you want to touch Lucknow, if you are going from Agra to Allahabad via Kanpur? The toll gate between Kanpur and Lucknow is very often congested, and it takes hours to clear! Plus Lucknow-Allahabad NH is a traditional two-lane highway. The road after Raebareilly towards Allahabad is not at all very smooth.

You can take the Kanpur bypass/fly-over, and directly move towards Allahabad. With moderate driving, you will cover the Kanpur-Allahabad distance in three hours.

Ok - no i will not goto Lucknow. I had just included it in my plan as a possible stopping point. But have decided against it.

So Lucknow will not be in my trip.

One associated questions - what are good eating places on the highway to stop for lunch, dinner, etc?
