re: Kochi - Goa - Hubli - Bangalore - Kochi : Route Queries

4 laning work in NH 17 will start soon in 1 year.So by 2020 expect amazing drive in this area!

Right now in many places nh17 has potholes. almost every 10km. Quality of work done is very poor.

Ravi.

re: Kochi - Goa - Hubli - Bangalore - Kochi : Route Queries

Sorry for the late response from my end. We left Kochi on 8th morning at 4.15 am reached Hubli at 8.30pm via Trichur, Palghat, Coimbatore bye pass, Hosur, Nice Road, Davengere. The drive was good except for the miserable streatch between Trichur and Walayar in NH47. Next day morning at 7.00am left Hubli and reached Siolim Goa at 2.30pm via Ankola, Karwar. I managed to get 22kmpl as per the MID, in this stretch from Hubli to Karwar, smooth flowing roads thru forest.

We were on the watch out for this monster hump, we have carefully negotiated three humps before this smoothly. But the one just before Ranebennur caught me off guard, I saw it late, made a glance on the rear view mirror found no one is right behind me, and then slammed on the breakes, but the ABS did not have sufficient distance to slow down enough, my front tyres crossed the hump and I managed to scrape the underbody on the hump. . I have the exact kilometer reading with me, which shall be updated here soon.

re: Kochi - Goa - Hubli - Bangalore - Kochi : Route Queries

Hello All

Planning to do a Trivandrum-Goa road trip during April 13th to 20th. We are 4 men travelling in a Duster. Request your valuable suggestions on the road condition of the Kochi-Kozhikode-Mangalore-Goa stretch. Should I seriously consider taking Trivandrum-Madurai-Bangalore-Hubli-Goa route ? I am very eager to take the Konkan route though since I have heard a lot about the beauty of that route. Since all 4 of us like to drive, we are thinking of doing it without any halt in between. Two of us will be awake on shifts.

In case you want to take the Konkan route, at least get past Kerla border and Mangalore coast line. You can do Coimbattore-Mysore-Hassan-Sagar-Honnavar-Ankola-Karwar-Goa.

Else the the dry 4-lane is best from a road conditions point of view.

Thanks ampere for the suggestion. Any rough idea on the difference in kms and time if I take Mysore-Honnavar-Goa route ?

In addition to ampere, if you want to take NH17, plan to leave Trivandrum by 8-9pm so that you will cover busy roads during night.

Total Distance is about 1200km. With Mysore being about 670.

TVM-Nagercoil-Dindigul-Odanchatram-Dharapuram-Palladam-Avinashi-Annur-Sathyamangalam-Mysore.

Mysore-Hassan-Tarekere-Shimoga-Sagar-Honnavar-Ankola-Karwar-Panaji.

Friends,

Has anyone got an update on the road condition from Cochin to Goa thru NH17?
Planning a trip in 2 weeks time and if the roads are good then won't mind driving up.

- 2-Lane roads
- Heavy traffic roads
- Many locations are bad till you hit Mangalore.

Conditions improve there on.

Thanks Ampere.

Am very familiar with the roads but wanted to know about the condition of the roads. Recently read somewhere that roads till Kasargod or Mangalore are butter smooth .

- Not much idea on roads south of Mangalore
- Mangalore-Udupi-Kundapur : Very good roads
- They break around Hemmadi, Baindoor, Bhatkal.
- Again they are decent north of Honnavar

No way! You would just make it to Udupi/Kundapur or some where around. 500km of extreme traffic till here. More than race against time, its about high fatigue.

Done this section few times and the lowest I could manage is 17hrs.

Kanjangad to Mangalore is not very good and from Mangalore to Goa is good.

re: Kochi - Goa - Hubli - Bangalore - Kochi : Route Queries

Early next year, I've to attend some events in Cochin and Mangaluru.
Between the two events there is a 2 day gap (First one is in Cochin).
I was thinking of doing some sightseeing in Cochin(1st half of the day) and drive to Calicut in the second half of the day(~200 kms)
And then the same 1st half sightseeing in Calicut and drive the second half to Mangaluru the next day(~250kms)
Is it a good option? or should I stay one full day in Cochin and then drive the next day to Mangalore (~450kms)?
