Yes your friend is right, I have taken train when returining from Pune and a few other times. It sure takes a lot of time,between Belgaum-Hubli stretch,but it is very scenic.There are a lot of buses from Belgaum to Hubli, alomost every half hour.

Sorry I missed that he is taking train. Buses do pass through Yellapur
