This road is in very bad condition now. Its covered with plenty of pot-holes and uneven stretches.

Araikulam - Pattamadai - Mukkudal - PottalPudur Tenkasi route is good. Since I came from south(Nagercoil), this route was a straight forward one. This route helps to avoid entering Tirunelveli as well.

Need to travel trivandrum (kazhakkottam) to bangalore.
- avoiding kaliyikkavilai route due to terrible construction activity
- avoiding travelling ekm-palakkad route to reduce fatigue from 2L traffic

Travel will start anytime between 0000 & 0300. ONLY priority is smooth surface. The option being considered is :

stretch 1:
kazhakkoottam-pothenkodu-kilimanoor-nilamel-madathara-kulathupuzha-thenmala-aryankavu

-KL/TN border-

stretch 2:
-ilanji (left turn to rajapalayam highway) - puliyangudi (turn right) - sankarankovil - kalugumalai - join NH7 near kovilpatti - always on NH7 until bangalore.

Question is about stretch 2:
how is the road condition in the above stretch till hitting NH7 ?
The idea is to hit NH7 as quickly as possible, hence avoiding rajapalayam-siriviliiputhur-kalluppatti-tirumanagalam highway ; Or do you think I should take this and avoid a couple of NH7 tolls ?

The road from Tirunelveli to Tenkasi is in an extremely poor condition.

We had been to Tenkasi and Courtallam on a trip to Tirunelveli in December and the roads were filled with potholes and uneven surfaces throughout. Potholes are abundant all the way till Tenkasi / Courtallam.

While returning back, the bad roads coupled with darkness made it a very poor drive back. I suggest you avoid this route and take an other route (if any).

Better to stick with stretch 1 unless someone confirms that stretch 2 is good. Considering that Tenkasi - Tirunelveli is in a very bad state, the fate of Sankarankovil route could be similar too.

Stretch 1 is in KL , and stretch 2 is the next leg in TN.
Are you saying - "avoid Sankarankovil route (let go of the hurry to hit nh7 near kovilpatti) and alter stretch 2 via rajapalayam, srivilliputhur, tirumangalam and then hit nh7 " ?

Sorry, venkyhere. Yes, better to avoid Sankarankovil route unless someone confirms that its good. Also, google shows rajapalayam route as quickest.

Visiting the Tirunelveli area on the weekend of Apr 29th. Would like to visit some waterfalls and bathe under the waterfall. Say Courtallam or Agasthiyar, etc.

Is there water there this time if the year?

arun_josie, Are you aware of the current road condition on the tenkasi-tirunelveli stretch? Plan to drive to chengannur and the want to avoid rajapalayam-srivilliputhur-tirumangalam as it cuts through multiple towns.


Last when I took this stretch in April 18, the roads weren't smooth, could keep up speeds between 50-60 kms/hr, but it wasn't like there was massive potholes every few kilometers. Post Tirunelveli, it was a blissful drive all the way to Bangalore.

My friend traveled 2 months ago and as usual, the roads between Tirunelveli-Tenaksi is still bad. With rains, i would assume it would stay the same or worsened.

I am planning a trip from Kudankulam to Courtallam in December. Considering the recent rains and the previous conversations around bad road conditions, should I consider an alternate route to Tirunelveli - Tenkasi Route ?

Drove from Bangalore to Rajapalayam last friday 26th Aug 2022.

As usual,excellent roads all the way till Madurai/Thirumangalam till you exit to Kollam road.
From there, the 2L roads are good, but little bumpy due to patches here and there. No potholes at all. Its very scenic and good to drive in medium speeds due to traffic and 2 wheelers.

Rajapalayam to Sankaran Koil to Tirunelveli is butter smooth roads.
