Saundatti : Route Queries

I am looking to travel on weekend from Bangalore to Saundati (Yallammagudda).
Which is the best route apart from Bangalore-Chitradurg-Hubli -Dharwad-Saundati and how is the road condition from Dharwad to Saundati.
Planning for overnight stay at Dharwad.

From a friend who is a native of Dharwad. The road is a single carriageway, pretty motor-able and this route has been traversed a month back by him.

Dharwad to Saundatti - some road work is in progress. So in some areas, there are diversions, but not bad ones. Please allow 1 hour - 1 hour 15 min for this section, even though it is only about 35km.

What time of the day will you pass through Hubli / Dharwad ?

Well I plan to start early from Bangalore/Marthahalli around 6am.
not driven to Dharwad earlier , my guess it should take 7 hours max to Dharwad, so may be around 1 to 2 pm afternoon.

re: Saundatti : Route Queries

Yes, that should be fine. Will you halt on the way back ?

I suggest you take the Hubli-Dharwad By-pass, and take the exit for Dharwad (turn right). (The left turn at this toll booth goes to Kalghathi).
This must be the 3rd toll after the big toll at Hubli entrance.
Once you take this exit, go towards Dharwad - about 4 km. Ask directions towards Jubilee circle / CBT (City Bust Terminus). Ask directions towards Saundatti.

The Dharwad - Saundatti road is mostly 2 lane wide. Some road widening work is in progress. The rest of the section often has patchy surfaces.

About 10 km (give or take 2km) before Saundatti is a small bridge that has a raised section, so pls do slow down at that point. (This is a small one, about 5-10m crossing).

Once you reach Saundatti, follow the blue line:

Saundatti : Route Queries-saundatti.jpg

One suggestion for Hotel : Kamat Upachar opp SDM Dental college. (It is between Hubli & Dharwad. So if you take By-pass, you will by-pass this also).

Fuel:
1. MRPL bunk outside Hubli (before toll booth)
2. IOC bunk opp Lakshmi talkies in Dharwad. Is on the road you will follow.
3. There was a Shell in Hubli city, but you will not go near that if you take the by-pass.

Food:
Kamat Upachar at Sira,
Kamat Upachar before Hubli (Hubli-Ranebennur)

Edit:
Between Hiriyur and Sira, there is road work in progress. The NH goes into the Service road at a few places (both directions)

Hope this helps

This is very Helpful. Thanks for your Inputs, I prefer to halt in Dharwad or Hubli and drive back to Bangalore next day morning.

Take the Belgaum-Bailhongal-Saundatti route. The roads are very good. Do NOT try to reach Dharwad and travel to Saundatti - the roads are miserable for 20-30 kms though they are being repaired.

Re: Belgaum - Saundatti Road

@AltoLXi, when did you last travel on the BGM-Bailhongal road ?

The Beglaum - Bagalkot road is much better, though 2 lane / not-divided. I would take Belgaum - Nesargi - Yaragatti - Saundatti, though it is a just a little longer. But is the best of the options.

Alternatively, you could take the route suggested by Google: Belgaum - MK Hubli (on NH-4)>
After MK Hubli, go to Belawadi and then to Saundatti. While the MK-Hubli - Belawadi - Saundatti may not be as good as the BGM-Nesargi-Yaragatti-Saundatti section, this option has the advantage of being on the NH-4 much longer. Once you get off the NH-4, the road is as good / better than if going via Bailhongal

Re: Belgaum - Saundatti Road

I travelled a year back via Bailhongal. I suggested this route as I went through Dharwad enroute to Saundatti but while returning I took Bailhongal route. I haven't traveled MK-Hubli - Belawadi - Saundatti. I will take this route the next time I travel there.

@AltoLxi, regarding the route you took:

1. DWR - Saundatti is much better now. It is being widened. One side is fairly complete, and they are working on the other side.

2. My suggestion to go via MKH-Hubli & Belawadi is if one is coming from BGM.

I know the old DWR-Saundatti was bad. EVen 3 months back it iwas bad, but not now. Hopefully, both sides will soon be completed.

Re: Saundatti : Route Queries

I am driving from Bangalore to Hubli this Saturday and have Saturday second half as spare. Assuming 5-6am start from Blore and that I can reach Hubli in 6-7 hrs, can I go for a quick Darshan at Saundatti? Will there be any special rush due to Saturday? This will be the first time I'll be driving from Bangalore to Hubli. Best route and stay (either in Hubli or Dharwad) & food recommendations please.

Also, what is the best route from Hubli to Saundatti?

Prashkul - Which part of Bangalore you would be starting from ? I did a Bangalore-Pune last week, and from the NICE road entry point from Kanakpura road, I reached Hubli in less than 6 hours. So, your budget of 6-7 hours should be perfect.

Route is fairly simple - if from Bangalore south, exit at NICE on Tumkur Road, continue on the Nelamangala toll road, and keep following that road straight ahead all the way to Hubli. Roads are a delight to drive on.
