Roads from Noida to Moradabad are patchy. Noida-Hapur is good, Hapur-Gajraula is horrid & Gajraula-Moradabad is pretty decent though you have to be careful with the various diversions.

Moradabad to Ramnagar is fabulous & above that is pretty good too or was last time around. The last 10-15kms, might be a little bit broken though. Also make sure you don't travel on nights on this route & also watch out for fog.

From Ramnagar, you go through Kaladhungi, approximately 60 kms, good roads. You don't have to touch Haldwani - that is a longer route. At Kaladhungi, turn left to go durect to Nainital - there are clear signboards as you enter Kaldhungi town.

Can you please udpate the route status from Delhi to Nainital. I'm leaving this Friday and need to under stand the Moradabad - Ramnagar U-Turn funda.

Take the Moradabad bypass (town to the left) all the way to the end - you will cross 2 toll gates. At the end, you will see the road going into Moradabad to your left. U-turn into it - there are sign boards indicating Corbett WLS. Go down 1 km. You will see a road going to right - sign boards again. Road straight goes into the city. Turn right and you will reach Ramnagar via Kashipur.

I am currently in Rampur. Drove down yesterday and due to some Ganga Snan festival, the Hw was a mess. It took 5 and half hours to reach Rampur. My relatives have informed that some flyover has been closed near kaladungi so that route to Nainital ( From NCR) is a no go.

My wife & I plan to spend a few days in Nainital in January. We intend to fly from Kolkata to either Delhi or Lucknow (whichever destination is more convenient for the next leg) & then travel by hired car to Nainital.
I would like to make a request for the following information.
As of now, which route has the better roads, Delhi - Nainital or Lucknow - Nainital?
What would be the approximate travelling times?
Can anyone provide links to route maps for Lucknow - Nainital?
Is it possible to hire a car without a chauffeur & drive it myself?
I have driven a bit on the Eastern Ghats & found that enjoyable. Are the mountain roads here much more tortuous/ treacherous?
Is taking the overnight train to Kathgodam/ Haldwani/ Lal Kuan & then onwards by road a better option?
Hotel recommendations in a budget of 5-7K/ night for a double-room with breakfast will also be sincerely appreciated. Central heating would be a must. We would prefer a pick-up & drop facility for the Mall if the hotel is located high up in the mountains as both of us have a bit of arthritis in the knees.

Hertz gives cars without chauffeur, but its 1200/day for a small hatch
Delhi Nanital is only 6 hours(except for full moon days), and the ghat section is an easy 30kms.
Rest of the trip is through a forest road.
Delhi-Moradabad-Bazpur-Kaladunghi-Nainital

5-7K will get you a very expensive and nice hotel like Manu Maharani.
Most of these luxury hotels have pick up and drop facility.

Train route will be more economical than hiring a self drive car from hertz

Lucknow-Nainital would be 100-150kms more than Delhi-Nainital plus the roads are in bad state too from Lucknow to Bareilly.

I would suggest you travel to Delhi & drive from there. But, avoid night journeys especially since it's now Fog season around these parts and you'll find a lot of that on the stretch from Brijghat to Moradabad.

Anyone heading from Delhi to Nainital by road must check and avoid auspicious days to travel this route.

At Brajghat about an hour from Hapur (before Gajraula) lies the river Ganges and a narrow 2 lane bridge over it. If there is a Ganga snan (holy dip) it can take you hours to clear this 5-10 km patch. I have been stranded as long as 6 hours in one spot.

I do this stretch every week. (Del-Hapur-Gajraula-Moradabad-Kashipur), and it pays to check ahead of time for the dates on which they have a snan planned.

The drive times however have come down darastically.
It used to take me 6 hours for 240 km,..last week I made in back in 4.

The best bet is to leave Delhi before 0700 hrs, as Ghazibad is the first bottle neck. After that its great rolling till as Ishan said you hit the end of Hapur bypass.

From there on it is STILL bone jarring till Gajraula.
Gajraula - Muradabad -Rampur bypass - Kashipur - Jim corbett
or Gajrula - Muradabad - Nanital are pleasant and great fun as Ishan pointed out.
