Nagpur - Ranthambore route query

Dear BHPians, I am planning a 2 day trip to Ranthambore with friends. I will be travelling from Hyderabad aiming to reach Ranthambore on 22nd Dec (Sat). While I am pretty well versed with the route conditions from Hyderabad to Nagpur, Nagpur onwards is a pure mystery. Google maps indicate the route: Nagpur - Betul - Itarsi - Bhopal - Sawai Madhopur (R'bore) Link http://goo.gl/maps/sUFvL

My queries for the route & destination experts here:

1) Road conditions of this route, any alternate routes?
2) Since the trip is a short one, I would like to explore the most scenic zone of the park (not necessarily tiger sighting). Which would be the best gate to enter?
3) Suggestions for stay (budget is 3k-4k, twin room with extra bed)
4) Any other suggestions are welcome

Re: Nagpur - Ranthambore route query

Hello ExtremeTorque.

I read your post with interest and amusement as on the same dates we will be driving from Jaipur to Bhopal and I was performing some research on the same route.

I clicked on the google maps link you've shown and if you read carefully it shows that in step number 58, there's a need to take a 'river ferry'. That's because the road doesnt exist at that point of time. Based on the phone calls I've made to people in Jhalawar, Bhopal so far here's what I understand:

From Bhopal you'd need to take the AB road to Biaora and go north/ north east and then take the turn towards Baran. Where you take the turn I've still not got reliable news - I suspect that the better option (though longer) will be to take the turn at kolaras onto NH76 (gmaps shows a shorter option of taking the turn from ruthiyal but I wouldnt bank on this). From here it's fairly straight forward as the road condition is excellent throughout. Go all the way till Kota and then go to SH-33. You'll end up on the Rajasthan Mega highway (Kota-Lalsot section). This is a lovely toll road and will take you straight to Sawai Madhopur. More details including road photos for this section are here: http://www.ridcor.in/lalsot-kota.html. All this is to be done assuming you have reliable information for the road until Bhopal.

If not, and IF and only IF you get reliable information on Betul-Indore section then I can confirm based on an acquaintence's recent trip to Maharashtra that the road from Indore-Kota via Chittorgarh is superb (from Kota you'd be on the mega highway anyways as mentioned above). It's pretty much a 4 lane highway throught except for a small stretch of 20 kms between Nimbahera and Neemuch (Raj state - MP state border) is somewhat broken. There's one two lane section as well but the condition is very good. I've seen photos of this August (monsoon time with greenry all around). This route is longer but will get you there in much better condition overall. In this, I have no news of Betul-Indore so hope someone else can confirm.

Now for the more important problem of Ranthambore. For this december last week, have you booked your safari tickets? Gypsys are sold out for the last week so you'll have to look at canters. Look at the site (redirected from Rajasthan state government tourism promotion website): http://www.rajasthanwildlife.com/ for stay etc and check for the safari dates either by clicking there or by clicking on this site (also a redirect from the previous one): http://www.rajasthanwildlife.in/make...anyourtrip.jsp

The best option (locationwise) would be RTDC accommodation - details on RTDC website. The other, more upmarket option is a place called Ranthambore Bagh. The latter gets very good tripadvisor reviews but the RTDC location (see this link for the view: http://www.rtdc.in/jhoomarbaori.htm) cant be beaten for any amount of money.

Good luck!
Vaibhav

The best route would be Nagpur-Indore-Ratlam-Neemuch-Chittor-Kota-Toll road to Sawai. You would get to drive on excellent 4 laned roads for a major part of your drive. This can be done over two days easily.Day 1 to Nagpur and day 2 to Sawai and onwards to Ranthambore.
