Route : Pune-Hubli-Chitradurga-Shimoga (NH4/NH13).
Condition: Brilliant 4-lane till Chitradurga. And a very decent 2-lane from there till Shimoga.

What to see? Some of the places:

- Kaas near Satara (Do I need to tell you! )
- Gokak falls Near Sankeshwar
- Chitradurga fort
- Jungle lodges at Dandeli
- Jog and Magod falls near Shimoga/Yellapur

I am planning to drive to Shimoga from Pune this weekend. Google suggests: Pune -> Ranebennur(NH4) -> Honali (SH76) -> Shimoga(SH25)

But I see from old posts there were suggestions to go up till Harihar and then take SH25 to honali->Shimoga.

If anybody with recent experience can advise it will be great

Ranebennur to Harihar Turn off for Honalli will take you less than 15 minutes as it is the same NH you would have driven from Pune.
The preferred has always been Harihar-Honalli as the roads are good. The Private operators like East West and Nandan with services originating from Shimoga take this route too.
Distance wise, both are more of less same or may differ by mere 5-8kms but the grouse with the Harihar option is that you will have to pay the a Toll (90 INR) and soon after exit the Highway.

Bottom Line - Stick to Harihar Honalli Road.

is this an ideal route ? I was given to understand that the Mangalore route is a coastal road and much more scenic than other - not sure if that true.

look forward to your guidance (would be traveling in low GC sedan).

Should never be an issue here.

Goa - Karwar - Kumta - Honnavar - Bhatkal - Udupi - Manglore - Puttur - Madikeri

Honnavar-Bhatkal-Udupi-Mangalore - This is NH17 and a coastal route. The condition of this road may not be all good, especially near Bhatkal as well as the Udupi-Mangalore section that is undergoing expansion. However, it is one of the beautiful roads almost hugging the coastline at many places that you wouldn't want to miss.

3rd Oct Coorg to Goa

You will have to pick the right route (Good condition) in this case. Madikeri-Somvarpet-Arkalgud-Holenarsipura-Channarayapatna-Arasikere-Kadur-Shimoga-Sagara-Karwar-Goa is what I would suggest due to road conditions.

As regards to route:
Mumbai-Goa: Instead of Amboli, take Chorla. (Pune-Kolhapur-Belgaum-Jambotti-Chorla-Goa)


Goa-Coorg or Coorg-Goa:
As Parag mentioned, if you take the coastal route, you will hear all the nice abuses from you family, for taking them on that route!

As Parag mentioned, take the interior roads via Hassan.

Goa-Karwar-Ankola-Honnavar-Jog-Sagar-Shimoga-Arsikere-Channarayapatna-Holenarasipur-Arkalgud-Shanivarsanthe-Madikeri.

If you are heading back to Mumbai from Madikeri then:

Madikeri - Shanivarsanthe - Holenarasipur - CR Patna - Neligere - Huliyar - Hiriyur - Hubli - Belgaum - Kolhapur - Pune - Mumbai

You have Gokak on Belgaum-Sankeshwar section. Or Kaas/Bamnoli near Satara. But then you need a day to be spent in these places.
