I believe you are talking about Rajasthan. You can take the himmatnagar route if you want to avoid delhi or the normal delhi route onto the grand trunk road.

If I may put forth from my experience of travelling with an elderly (70 yrs) as a passenger, especially on co-driver seat:
1. Try take less time on normal road drive before entering Ladakh so that you can have more relaxed time for Ladakh drive, if days are short. But take slowly throughout if no worry about days.
2. Take the drive slowly than on normal roads from Sonamarg onwards, more so for body adjustment to the altitude's climate and also due to the continuously twisty roads.
3. Not to panic if at all faced with shortness of breath. Keep training body for long exhale-inhales to accustom to the increasing altitudes as the climb begins later after Srinagar. If possible keep couple of small portable oxygen cylinders handy.
4. Do not stop for long at high passes, especially if weather is too tormenting, like at Penzi La, Darang Durung, Khardung La, Chang La etc. Keep a scarf, monkey-cap ready especially to wrap around the nose to help from chill, blasting winds etc. Snow can be enjoyed at low altitude places en-route instead of the peak points.
5. Avoid dehydration by taking small sips of water every now and then but not excessive water drinking.
6. Care for vertigo, look upto the upper pastures, mountain peaks, rather than ahead on road and down in the valley.

Otherwise, there should be no need to worry, to take any medication etc.

Re: Leh, Ladakh and Zanskar - The Ultimate Guide

Hello BHPians!

Tentative plan for Ladakh starting 10th September from Trivandrum. 23 days trip! Car will be my XUV 500 2WD.

Experts, please do suggest if there is any infeasibility in the below plan. Also anyone on these routes during this time frame??

10/09/2014 Day 0 - Trivandrum to Kozhikode
11/09/2014 Day 1 - Kozhikode to Kolhapur (via Mangalore, Ankola, Hubli)
12/09/2014 Day 2 - Kolhapur to Ahmedabad (via Thane, Baroda)
13/09/2014 Day 3 - Ahmedabad to Amritsar (via Kishangarh, Hanumangarh, Abohar)
14/09/2014 Day 4 - Amritsar
15/09/2014 Day 5 - Amritsar to Srinagar (via Pathankot, Jammu)
16/09/2014 Day 6 - Srinagar
17/09/2014 Day 7 - Sringar - Gulmarg - Sonamarg
18/09/2014 Day 8 - Sonamarg to Parkachik
19/09/2014 Day 9 - Parkachik - Rangdum - Pensi La - Kargil
20/09/2014 Day 10 - Kargil - Leh
21/09/2014 Day 11 - Leh
22/09/2014 Day 12 - Leh - Khardung La - Diskit - Hunder - Turtuk
23/09/2014 Day 13 - Turtuk - Agham - Wari La - Pangong Tso
24/09/2014 Day 14 - Pangong Tso - Chushul - Kakasang La - Mahe - Loma - Hanle
25/09/2014 Day 15 - Hanle - Kyun Tso - Nidar - Sumdo - Tso Kiagar - Tso Moriri
26/09/2014 Day 16 - Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Debring - Jispa
27/09/2014 Day 17 - Jispa - Manali
28/09/2014 Day 18 - Manali - Delhi
29/09/2014 Day 19 - Delhi
30/09/2014 Day 20 - Delhi - Agra - Jhansi
01/10/2014 Day 21 - Jhansi - Nagpur
02/10/2014 Day 22 - Nagpur - Hyderabad - Bangalore
03/10/2014 Day 23 - Bangalore - Kanyakumari - Trivandrum

My main worry is about the Kakasang La & Kyun Tso Routes. Any news on the latest situation with these routes? Does my 2WD XUV have any chance of making it through??

Plan B for these routes is of course going via the Chushul Tsaga La route (Assuming Permits are ok) & Hanle Loma Mahe route.

Plan C if permits don't work out will be to go back to Karu, Upshi, Chumathang and on to Hanle. Hopefully I don't have to go all the way back to Plan C.

Any specific reason for taking NH 17 till Mangalore? I guess from Trivandrum to Kolhapur taking Nagarcoil- NH7- Bangalore- NH4 route may be faster.

Defintely mpsukhas. The Bangalore route will 100% be faster. However I actually wanted to do this trip in such a way that there is no overlap of routes on my onward & return journey..

Kyun Tso route is very dynamic. It may be passable one day, and be impassable 2 days later. Having a 4WD gives you confidence. A 2WD may or may not do it. You have to take the call when you reach there.

As for kakasang la, the biggest problem is the rocky road. 2WD is fine, but standard HT tires is just asking for trouble.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. For Kyun Tso, I will take a call once I am in Hanle. As for Kakasang La, has there been no road improvement. Have you heard of any one recently crossing it?

Lastly with regards to the overall plan, any thoughts?

In 2013 also, its the same rocks on road thing. 2WD is okay, but HT tires can get ripped. I doubt they have made the road this year too.

Leh one day is enough.
If you cannot get chushul permits, this buffer day will come in handy.
