Nope that section is still there, but there were other bad ones near Arakalgud which have been paved. This is just a less than 2km stretch which is manageable.

Unless @luvurride took the alternate road via Agrahara, this bad road of 2km is the road for CR Patna from Holenarasipura. All vehicles heading towards Bangalore took this route. Many of us traveled almost together till Kunigal so I'm sure about this.

Yes, that is while coming on Manthawadi - Mysore road. I have mentioned the approximate location based on sigh boards there, I am not able to recollect the exact safari start point since it was few years back.

Jungle lodges safari is on another side. They take you inside the forest around

In fact there used to be a Forest department safari at the point where you turn left to Kabini (where the bad road starts) on the HD Kote-Mananthavadi road. There is a Range Forest Office just before the forest entry gate. They used to have bus safaris in the evening if there were enough people. I have been on this safari a couple of times and they generally take the JLR safari route only.

Thanks! Had seen your post before traveling. Yes, that stretch still exists and is horrendous but most people just ignore it as it's the only a small scar on this route :D
However, per my friend my Shanivarasanthe, there is an alternate road from Holenarasipura to CR Patna via Agrahara and he always takes this on his trips. I'm still trying to find out how to spot that road and get more details - here.

My route/road condition report is here

Hi Luvurride,

I am planning to go to Coorg with family. We are travelling on weekdays to avoid the crowd. Since we are sick of Mysore road, planning to take the Kunigal option. Group consists of 5 adults and a kid. The vehicle is XUV and plan is to start at 5:00 am tomorrow or day after. Return on Saturday.

The idea is to go straight to Kushalnagar. The Somwarpet-Madikkeri-Kushalnagar is the one I can see in Google maps if I follow your route. But Arakalagud-Konanur looks like a shorter option. Would you suggest this?

Which is the best place for breakfast with good restrooms?

Thank You

Vindy

I had a dash to Coorg last weekend. Tried both routes - through Mysore/Hunsur on the way and ChannarayaPatna/Kunigal/Nelamangala on the return.

Onward took about 6.30 hours from Whitefield with final destination being Ammathi. Started@3.30pm and reached by 10pm with few sporadic stops totalling to 30 mins.

Return took the same time of 6.30 hours from Ammathi to Thanisandra. Add about 30 more mins to reach Whitefield. There were stops of about 45 mins in between.

The Madikeri-Somwarpet-Shanivarsanthe-Arakalgud-CPatna is fabulous now with negligible traffic.

So it makes sense to take this route if your origin is North Bangalore. If it is South, better to stick to Mysore road.

Frankly, for sheer driving pleasure, I loved the CPatna route with the innumerous speed bumps spoiling it all the way till Madikeri in the Mysore route.

Not worth it. Bad roads.

Swathi Delicacy about 8-10 km after Kunigal bypass.

@Ampere already answered your questions! The roads are good through Madikeri and you don't have to go into Madikeri town as you will connect directly onto the Madikeri-Kushalnagar road away from the town, where you head left. This option would be fast even though the distance is longer.

There are quite a few options along the road once you turn-off from Nelamangala all the way till CRPatna, including CCD, Swathi, Mayura and the likes. You can pick one that looks decent enough depending upon what time suits you for breakfast. Personally, I tried Mayura that comes just after the toll near Belur cross. Hope this helps.

I have planned a weekend stay at Windlfower Resorts in Suntikoppa. I am put up in North Bangalore.

I have got two options

Route one : Bangalore - Nelamangala - CR patna - Holenarsipura - Somwarpet - Shanivarsanthe - Madapur - Suntikoppa

Kunigal Route

This looks like a good option. I am only worried about the last stretch from Madapur to Suntikoppa as this is not on the Madikeri route. Any info on this stretch would be very helpful.

Second option ofcourse is via Mysore. The gaziliion speedbrakers and wannabe racers are a big put off .

Mysore Route

Which of the two do you guys think is a better option? Thanks in advance!

I had taken route one with difference in last leg since my destination was Madikeri. As a welcome change from SH 17 route I would recommend the same, however road conditions nearer to Madikeri was bit patchy (though not bad).

Mysore - Madikeri highway is in great shape, hence if you are planning an early morning start you can opt for the same.

SH17 Mysore Road route - With a 4-4.30am start, apart from the gazillion speed breakers (you can mostly manage these with lesser traffic around), there will be no wannabe schumachers around :D
However, it negates the availability of food/break options since most willl be closed at that time leaving you with McDonalds or Cafe Coffee Day options.

I would say start early and take this while going.

On the return you can try the other route.
Madikeri-Somwarpet-Shanivarasanthe was a good drive last I drove in October but not sure about the Madapur-Sunticoppa section.

Thanks. I think I will take the Mysore Road option as it is shorter by about 35 kms plus no bad roads enroute. I'll just have to deal with the speed breakers.

I am looking at a 7:30 AM start on Sunday. Very early morning start is not possible as a 2 yr old is in the passenger list :). Besides my check in is at 12 Noon.

Expect dense traffic, it may not be a great drive on SH 17 if you start at that time, more so if it's a holiday season/long weekend. Then, why not take Nelamangala-Channarayapatna route while going ?
Only bad stretch I remember is when nearing Holenarasipura which is about 1-2Km, and that can be avoided by going from Channarayapatna to Holenarasipura via Agrahara - details Here

I am back from my Coorg trip. Took the Mysore road option both ways. My destination was Suntikoppa which is about 15 kms before Madikeri town if you are driving from Mysore. Total driving time was exactly 4 hrs 45 mins each way (excluding breaks) . Roads between Mysore and Madikeri are in excellent shape :thumbs up. Traffic on Mysore road on Sunday morning was quite high but luckily there weren't any jams.

Hi all,

I am heading to Coorg next week.
Starting on Monday morning and planning to be put up there for three nights. From there headed towards Chikamagalur via Charmadi. One night at Chikamagalur and returning to Bangalore on Friday via Hassan, Belur & Halebidu.
Staying at Kabbe Holidays in South Madikeri and Shivekaa Homestays in Chikamagalur.
Going to driving my i10 along with my wife.

Here is route I am planning to take.
Seeking suggestions or opinions-

Bangalore (5am) - Mandya (SH17) - Mysore ORR - KushalNagar (SH88) - Dubare Elephant Camp (9:30am)
Backtraking from Dubare - Bylakuppe Golden Temple (1pm)

Bylakuppe - Siddapura (SH91) - Virarajendrapet - Kabbe Holidays

From Kabbe to Chikamagalur via Charmadi, i am planning on this route.
Kabbe - Madikeri - Sullia (SH 88) - Puttur - Belthangadi (SH 118) - Charmadi (NH 234) - Mudigere - Chikamagalur (SH64) - shivekaa
