Impossible! Tiruchendur to Rameswaram takes 5-6 hrs. You could do 22 well bath+temple or Dhanushkodi, not both. Beyond 5:00 PM both cannot be done.

Thanks Narayan. I am planning to leave BLR on 1st Feb early morning. The plan is to reach Trichendur by 4 PM , have darshan and travel to Rameshwaram on 2nd Feb morning. Complete the 22 wells and Danushkodi and travel to Madurai in the evening . Morning Darshan on 3rd Feb and return back to BLR. Will this work out. Can you share good hotels to stay at Rameshwaram and Madurai . |
Your plan should work Gopi. For the first day, I suggest that you drive back to Tuticorin after Tiruchendur darshan and stay in Tuticorin for the night. This will help you save atleast 90 minutes drive from Tiruchendur to Tuticorin the next day. From Tuticorin, take the east coast road all the way to Rameswaram next day. Driving time is about three and half hours. So plan start time accordingly.
Hotel Raj is a decent place to stay at Tuticorin if you are looking for medium budget option.

Went to Thiruchendur last week. Took the route of Salem, Dindgual , Tutucorin,Thriuchendur. Stayed at Ramesh Iyengar hotel which is next to Chitrapark. The next day morning 6 AM started and reached Madurai by 9AM and had darshan at Meenakshi temple and reached back at home around 5PM.
Hello Everyone,
Below is tentative itinerary for a road trip from Bangalore - Tiruchendur -Rameshwaram - Bangalore.
Planning to start from Bangalore to Tiruchendur early morning on 27th of November, visit the temple and then head to Dhanushkodi on the 28th, Rameshwaram on the 29th and travel back to Bangalore on the 30th.
Need advice for the below query:-
1. How is the road condition on this route post the cyclone and is it safe to travel now as there is another rain alert given in TN?
2. Are there any restrictions due to COVID in any of these places?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Nish

Though the number of days you have in plan is good and relaxed, these specific dates are not good given that another low pressure is just forming and heavy rains are expected.
With so much copious amount of rains this rain, and going by history of Tuticorin district, I would obviously expect road conditions to be bad to very bad. For majority part, I haven't driven in good roads in Tuticorin district as it is always bad most part of the year. So , feel lucky if you find good roads.
No covid restrictions anywhere - I guess people have forgotten covid and moved on. Absolutely no CAB. So be watchful of that.

I would second Ravi's thoughts, the forecast is grim for South TN later this weekend, if this trip is something unavoidable, you would have to pray for less rain.
If it rains heavily, I am sure Dhanushkodi will be closed for visitors.

Thanks for this information Ravi, it's extremely helpful. The low pressure area news did make me think twice about this trip. But now I've decided to push this by a week to wait and watch how things unfold.
Thanks,
Nish

Thanks FURY_44. No, this is not one of those unavoidable trips, we just felt everyone at home had some free time and this was a long pending visit, hence thought of it.
I definitely don't want to embark on a 1,500km + trip with my family knowing that it's not the best weather condition to travel. Hence have decided to push this to the following weekend, will wait and watch. Hopefully the weather gets better by then.
Thanks,
Nish

Tiruchendur just got hammered about 130 mm (and counting) over the last 2-3 hours. Not a great idea to travel for darshan this weekend.
In general I would adopt a wait and watch for any TN or south AP coastal destination till 2nd December

Yes, saw this video today and patted myself on my back for taking the right decision of pushing the trip by a week.

Hi Everyone,
Planning to make this trip happen this weekend (04-Dec to 07-Dec). I did check the weather report on Google, there are no traces of rain for the next 10 days.
Hence assuming it is safe for the travel.
Just worried about the road conditions after the recent rains and inter-state travel restrictions imposed because of the Omicron variant. (This will be a round trip Bangalore - Tiruchendur - Rameshwaram - Bangalore)
If anyone could help me with answers to these questions, it would be extremely helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Nish
Apart from Uttarakhand, no other state has imposed Omicron restrictions yet.
You can expect top level tarmac peeled off. But this is likely only in coastal towns. Roads leading into Tuticorin or to Tiruchendur were not good a year back, should be even worse after the deluge a week back. So better to stick to Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur.

+1. Better stick to Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur.
I would say, even that route is not that good/great, but just okay. But not much choice.

Got it, will take the Tirunelveli route to Tiruchendur.
Thanks for the suggestion and advice.

Nish
Returned from a trip to Tiruchendur via Madurai-Tuticorin. Roads are 6/4 lanes all the way to Tuticorin, and 2-lane for the last 38 kms to Tiruchendur.
Madurai Bypass from Kappalur till NH38 exit has excellent surface for only Rs. 15 toll. Madurai-Tuticorin is a driver's delight with low traffic and overall great surface. Tuticorin-Tiruchendur was also pretty fast for a 2-lane road.
The only issues were a few meters of broken patches on Madurai-Tutocirin stretch of NH38 and annoying speed breakers at every village on the Tiruchendur stretch. And Tuticorin city roads are a mess; unfortunately we stayed in the city so had to bear it.
It is pretty hot out there, with day temps at 34 degrees even around a Winter Solstice :)
There are quite a few constructions on the 4-lane stretches till Karur, but nothing major in terms of delay. However, Salem city seems to come back with a vengeance even with the flyovers. While returning, about 10 mins wasted at the NH44/79 T-junction, and full of traffic till Omalur. For some reason local bikes take the highway instead of empty well-surfaced service roads.
