Summer retreat from Coimbatore - Suggestions?

I'm planning a trip for the summer, probably somewhere within a 250km radius of Coimbatore. Suggestions pleasE?
I've gone through some of the exceptional travelogues by tbhpians, and am leaning a bit towards munnar. --> is it a good choice?
The thing is that i want the place to be cold and also breathtaking ( like with not too much people or too much buildings around).

p.s- things to do, well-known resorts and other suggestions are also welcome!

THANKS!

Munnar, Kodai and Ooty. Now all these places would be brimming with people. Please plan accordingly.

As ampere has suggested, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar might get a little crowded during summers.

Alternatively you can visit these places:

1. Valparai and Top Slip in Tamil-Nadu
2. Vythiri (Wayanad) in Kerala
3. Chikmagalur and Kemmanagundi in Karnataka
4. Silent Valley National Park and Kotagiri near Ooty
5. Coorg in Karnataka

There are plenty of threads in teambhp about Valparai, Vythiri, Chikmagalur and Coorg so you will get a lot of info regarding your trip plan.

The key here is to find hotels which are away from the bustling crowds in popular hill stations, like if you are headed towards Ooty, it's better to stay in Kotagiri or Coonoor, similarly if you are headed towards Munnar, stay at Chinnakanal or even go to Vagamon if you don't want crowds.

KTDC in Munnar and Thekkady are good places to look at , though they are slightly on the expensive side .

Le Pondy at Pondicherry is another good option to look at , but it wont be cold for sure

re: Summer retreat from Coimbatore - Suggestions?

@ampere : Thanks! and of the three places, which will see the most crowd?

@//M : Thanks a lot! will definitely look at those places also! talking about wayanad, is it as good as munnar in terms of climate and scenery?

@Lukeskywalker: Thanks! and yes staying away from crowd is the main priority. and vagamon looks interesting!! judging by the pics on google, makes me wonder why its not popular like munnar!

@speedsatya: Pondy is too far! KTDC was on my list. but due to lack of proper reviews i couldn't judge! are there any reliable homestays in munnar region ?

- All of them would be equally crowded.
- Coorg, Chikkamagulur would be hot. They are at lower altitudes.
- Idea would be to go to one of the three (any), and as Luke said, find a hotel, which is far from the Madding Crowd (), and has good views.
- And you don't visit any tourist points. Chill out maximum at the hotel

I think Valparai is best bet for you which is not too far from CBE. Compared to other 3 places mentioned, Valparai is less crowded.

Book a guest house in "Waterfall Estate" and simply enjoy the time with family in middle of tea estates & yummy food. Absolutely no crowd in that place. Except for BSNL, you won't get signal for other mobile operators, so thats even better not to get disturbed. You will see amazing views in Valparai too, so will fit your bill better.

Just my 2 cents....

+1 to Ravi. Valparai is a very nice quaint place. But you should also note that its not a commercial tourist place. So you dont get many hotels but a few estate bungalows. And these places get filled up quite fast.

Re: Summer retreat from Coimbatore - Suggestions?

A few links to some of the offbeat places that I have been considering in and around Chikmagalur. Haven't stayed in any of them but most have very positive reviews from people who have stayed there (inputs from Facebook)
Being in the Ghats
Gatikallu
Flameback
Gonakal
Nesting Grounds
