Driving holiday from Mysore - Any recommendations?

Hello all,

I'm planning a three to four day driving holiday from Mysore towards the end of December. My requirements are:

1) Scenic and relatively less crowded destination
2) Top quality roads (minimal traffic, smooth surface) for most of the journey.

Assuming a 300-400 km radius, any recommendations based on recent trips?

Requirement #1 is quite difficult to satisfy during Dec end and when combined with #2 will make it even tougher (bad roads lead to good destinations)
Some places you could consider are Ooty (avoid the town, stay at Red Hills near Avalanchi for example), Coonoor, Kodaikanal, Tirthahalli (some good home/estate stays), Kudremukha and surroundings, Wayanad (vythiri, banasura Sagar dam area or kuruva deep island)

I even heard Goa will not be as crowded this year

You will find most of Bangalore in all places within a 500 km radius of Bangalore (Including Mysore). So a calm quiet place at the end of the year would be Bangalore itself

Jokes apart, if you can pick the days avoiding weekends-Which means the Chirstmas and New Year weekend, you may be slightly better off.

The Chikmaglur-Sakleshpur belt is also worth looking at. If I am not mistaken, when going from Mysore, you can take routes that avoid the traffic from Bangalore and hence atleast takes care of requirement number 2. Areas in Coorg closer to Kerala can also be looked at- The Kutta-Gonikoppal-Virajpet areas. If the driving part is important, you can head towards Central-South Kerala. The Munnar-Alleppy belt. But traffic will be high.

Thank you for the replies. Indeed, it will be tough to beat the Bangalore crowd but I was hoping for some out of the way destinations - as expected with fewer things to do. Kudremukh and the Kerala side of Coorg seem to be really good possibilites.

Kumta with its pristine beach, nearness to Karwar , Murdeshwara, sirsi would be a good place to try out. Bear in mind there are good Ayurvedic spas near Kumta and you can get a well deserved massage for ending the year 😊

Thank you all for the advice. After considering hotel availability and type, we're down to two options - Neliyapathy near Palakkad or Allepey.

Suggestions welcome!

If you are looking at Allepey, look for Kumarakom too. But yes most houseboats and resorts will be pricey.

Homestays near Thirthahalli are a great option. Less crowds, smooth roads and lots of interesting places to see -

You can consider Tirunelly and Kuruav island side of Wayanad. This part is less crowded compared to SultanBathery and Kalpetta side and is known for its pristine forests and wildlife. You can drive through Nagerhole and return through Baveli Kabani side. Distance one side will be less than 100 kms.

Wow guys, incredible array of options you've all laid out! This is going to need some serious research from my end.

Which are the places in first three photos?

They look cool. Especially the one with road.

Highly recommended if you love birds, greenery and nature. Not recommended if you are addicted to Whatsapp because there is no phone network there.

The third pic is that of Kundadri Hill.

The climb is pretty steep at places. Expect some wheelspin during rains, especially if your car tyres are old.
