Finally I used this shortest route TVM-Ginjee-uthangarai-Krishnagiri only...it took almost 4 hrs to reach hosur (with at least two breaks in between)..so effective time on wheel was 3 hrs..

I ended up paying Rs.500 as tax at TN border (valid for a week), and Rs.420 (Rs.370 tax + 50) at the Pondicherry border (valid for the 3 days we had planned).
The Arcot-Tindivanam route was perfect. Though we did miss the Tindivanam bypass (I think).

How is the road condition? Can a sedan make it without much trouble?

You can refer the below link of mine. I travelled on the Mathur-Uthangarai-Singarapettai-Chengam-Tiruvannamalai-Gingee route on April 30th 2017.

Re: Bangalore - Pondicherry : Route Queries

Guys,

Need suggestions

I would be travelling to Pondicherry this coming weekend and would like to know the best route options to travel. I would be travelling in a hatchback.

Need your recommendations on the route conditions and the best route to drive.

Should I be sticking to
(1) Hoskote->Chittor->Arcot->Vandavasi-> Tindivanam->Puducherry
(2) Hosur->Krishnagiri->Chengam->Gingee-> Tindivanam->Puducherry
(3) Dharmapuri->Salem->Kallakurichi->Villupuram->Puducherry

Regards
Sandy

Where are you starting from in Bangalore? Route 3 is just not worth it. Try
1. Hosur->Krishnagiri->Vellore->Arcot->Vandavasi-> Tindivanam->Puducherry
2. Hosur->Krishnagiri->Barugur->Thirupathur->Singarapettai->TV Malai->Tindivanam->Pondicherry.

If you stay in North Bangalore, you can try Chittor->Arcot and continue on 1 above.

I will be starting from Mahadevapura. To be more precise, near to Graphite India.

Couple of posts in this thread mentions that some stretch in route 2 is not in a good condition to drive. Wanted to know if the condition is the same

Regards
Sandy.

My recommendation would be Route 2. I traveled on this route to Gingee in the last week of April 17.

Choose route-1 for onward journey and route-2 for return journey (assuming early morning start from Bangalore and return journey concluding in the evening/night).
Early morning start from Bangalore will ensure not much traffic between KA boarder and Arcot. This stretch is very difficult to negotiate during evenings, hence choose route-2.

P.S: I too stay in Whitefield and done this trip couple of months back.

I am also heading to Pondicherry and taking the route 1. I stay near kadugodi, so the Hoskote toll is just 10 minutes away from my house.

- 4 Lane till Arcot is safest option of all.
- If you start early morning, I would still suggest the Hosur-Krishnagiri-Vellore-Arcot option (Cheyyar/Vandavasi)
- Lot of options for food too.
- On the way back I think it makes sense to come via Kolar. That would help beat the city traffic.
- Tiruvannamalai option have good 2-lanes, but dont expect any major break options.
- There are some decent break points on Chitoor road too, but the numbers dont come close to options on the Hosur-Krishnagiri side.
- Arcot-Chittoor-Palamener-KA border is 2-lane with lots of heavy traffic.

In Pondy, you can visit the Panchavatee temple (36 ft Hanuman idol), Auroville, beach, Aurobindo ashram.
From Bangalore, the best route would be via Vellore, Kanchpuram and Chengelpettu. Till Vellore, there are plenty of options to break for food. Sai Sangeet near Vaniyambadi is a nice option.
