Cliffhanger, Thanks. when you said entire stretch from Bangalore to Pondy is in bad shape, you did not mean the Bangalore - Krishnagiri stretch. Right? Or did the 6-laning work screwed up this stretch also

Regards

Gopi

Bored of the 6-lane highways, tried this route, only to experience the chaos. Sparse traffic was the only solace.

If you are bored of 6-lane, you can also try :

Krishnagiri-Karimangalam-Morappur-Harur-Tiruvannamalai-Tindivanam-Pondicherry.

Tiruvannamalai - Tindivanam stretch is in pretty bad shape too.

Bad scene then! I though it would have been better off!
Another alternative then is : Tiruvannalai-Villupuram-Pondicherry.

Stick to the regular one for both drives. Vellore-Arcot-Cheyyar-Vandavasi-Tindivanam. Thats the best. Not worth taking a risk with Honda City.
Cheyyar/Vandavasi/Tindivanam have bypasses too.

Thats a HUGE roundabout. 120-150 km longer. But it has end-to-end 4-lane now.

The first route comes out to be 379 KM as per Google with time 6 hours 8 min (Vellore-Arcot-Cheyyar-Vandavasi-Tindivanam-Pondicherry)

Route via Salem - Attur - Ulundurpet - Villupuram - Pondicherry is 423 KM, time 6 hours 52 mins.

So its really not a detour with a difference of 44 KM. Fantastic road till Salem. Not sure beyond that though on NH 68. NH 45 is good to my knowledge.

The first route option itself is a detour to Tiruvannamalai. The one you mention adds on top. Hence I suggested that as a big detour.

Hotel Adyar Ananda Bhavan, Nehru Street, near Aurobindo Ashram and Manakula Vinayakar temple; Hotel Surguru; Hotel Jayaram.

Guys,

Need some input on a Bangalore Pondicherry trip that I might have to make next month. I plan to add Mahabalipuram to it as well. I plan to rent a self drive vehicle from Bangalore. My queries are following:

1) Being a self drive car (black plate), shall I be required to pay an entry tax at the TN border? And what about Pondicherry?

2) If I'm required to pay entry tax, how much is the rate for small cars? Where is it required to be paid? I mean the check post location. I plan to take the Bangalore- Vellore- Kanchipuram- Chengalpattu- Mahabalipuram- Pondicherry route.

3) Also, does this route touch Andhra Pradesh by any chance? Have heard that AP entry tax for commercial registered cabs are huge and they give a 1 year permit.

Your inputs on the current status of this stretch please. the entire 100 kms is single lane right ?

All in good condition and good 2-lane. See the changes I made to your link by shifting the points a bit. Now they reflect the bypasses for the towns too.

Modified Link

Thanks ampere for the link.

Arcot IS on NH46.

Drive beyond Vellore till you hit the bridge on river Palar (which is Arcot). Cross the bridge, take a U and come back. Take the first exit to left for the road to Cheyyar.
