I had travelled to Hampi during Aug first weekend. We took NH 4 Chitradurga NH 13 route. Road condition is good throughout barring two small stretch near to Hospet.
Yes roads around Hospet are in bad shape however once you reach Hampi roads improve. If you are thinking of taking taxi only worried about roads then I don't think it is required.
I feel it is better to hire a guide since they help in covering most of the places without you worrying much about routes and obviously are of help with explaining historic significance of each place. However do have an idea where all you want to visit and put that across to the guide morning when you start. You can hire a guide from the Ambedkar circle near the Mayura hotel at Hampi or with help of your hotel traveldesk. They charge around 1000 rs per day.
For stay we had opted hotel Mallige at Hospet. AC rooms cost ₹ 2200 per night including breakfast, they have Non AC rooms for 1000 which I felt was VFM since we will be at rooms only for night.
I had gone to KSTDC Mayura for lunch while at Hampi and the building is located near to the runis however felt restaurant understaffed.

A nightmare of red oxide, slush, boulders, rashly driven tippers and umpteen trucks, non existent roads across admittedly pristine forests visible through a red haze awaited me and my family. When driving from Bangalore to Bhopal couple of years back, the car never touched the bottom. Today, we literally scraped through. I feel sorry for your car. I ended up on this road as well few months back, like what happened to you, i was cursing MMI.
Ended up breaking both the front mudflaps of my Figo and scraping the underbody.
I took the cut off from Hospet to Bellary main road into JSW complex and did around 10 kms on this truck off road stretch when i decided to turn back before i loose my car .
The irony being, when i was approaching this stretch ,there was a board that said Bangalore which made me confident this is the right road.

Point B to C - this is NH-13, right? From previous posts, I thought NH-13 is in OK condition. From the map, Hospet bypass seems the section (Point C to D). Is it advisable to go through the town to reach Hampi to avoid bad roads?

May be I was sleeping when I responded. Slipped again! I meant C to D.

Check posts by Condor in this thread. He mentioned some options.

re: Bangalore to Hampi / Bellary : Route Queries

Slightly off topic, but does anyone have contact details of any reliable guide in Hampi ? I am visiting it for four days and it would make good sense to have a guide around.

Thanks

re: Bangalore to Hampi / Bellary : Route Queries

We are planning a holiday from Hyderabad to Coorg. However, we intend to stay stop and stay over at Hampi for a couple of night. What would be the best route to drive from Hampi to Coorg? Is it necessary to drive through Bangalore?

Also, on the way back from Coorg, we will stop over at Bangalore for a night. So, route suggestion for Coorg-Bangalore would also be appreciated.

Cheers,
Ardy

Just back from the trip to Hampi. Chitradurga and solapur highway was the route we took. Decent roads except for a few bad patches once you reach hospet.

We hired Mr.Srinivas (7406106495). Excellent guide, the only downside is that he does not know any language other than Kannada.

Gopal seems knowledgeable. Can speak fluently in Kannada/French and probably Hindi/English. Number - 9483936083

We hired his services by accident and we don't regret it...

re: Bangalore to Hampi / Bellary : Route Queries

Earlier posts suggest to avoid Hospet bypass road to reach Hampi, instead go through Hospet town. What is the route that I should follow? This one suggested by Gmaps:
