Starting a new thread to track or identify routes to places mentioned in historical texts or mythological texts. While one might be tempted to move this to another forum on tbhp, I still think that at the other it should be on the route queries forum as we will discuss routes and identification to such places. We can also share such places of historical and mythological importance if w already know.

Here is my starter question.

I have been trying to locate a 7th century Narasimha temple built by Chankun a Turkish minister of King Lalitaditya who ruled from Kashmir. He defeated a queen of Ratta dynasty who ruled Karnataka and to commemorate the victory, the minister built a temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha with the murthy depicting Narasimha killing Hiranyakashipu. The murthy was installed between 2 magnets and was suspended in the magnetic field depicting the nature of killing - neither on land nor in the sky. The rattas ruled from the north of present day Karnataka.

Anyone knows where the temple is ? The closest I could find on The internet is this : https://www.quora.com/Which-temple-d...-using-magnets : but not enough details in the answer.

Mods - ok with this thread ?

I asked Omnipotent Omnipresent and Omniscience Lord Google and I found two clues:

1) Ratta Dynasty was a minor Dynasty that ruled from Belgaum. So if this Kashmiri King defeated Ratta Dynasty Queen, his minister probably built the temple somewhere in Belgaum District.

2) The original reference to this temple is in a book (open source, free to download) called Kalhana's Rajatarangini: a chronicle of Kings of Kashmir, written by Marc Aurel Stein in the year 1900.

That sounds on the right track. But haven't been able to get past what you have. I think that it should be around North Karnataka too. Belgaum or Saundatti.. But no exact info

There are comparatively very few Narasimha temples in the entire state. And very few temples of any sort that use (or rather used in the past) magnets to suspend the idol.

There's a legend about magnets used in the Konark Sun Temple for example.

Whatever be the past I doubt the current idol will have any such thing.

Would be great to just trace that temple - irrespective of its current state... I don't know either if it exists today..

Sorry for hijacking the opening topic (great one, by the way!) But does anyone have all the places in "Ponniyin Selvan" (பொன்னியின் செல்வன்) - a Tamil classic?

A route map for all the places with historical & novel based annotations will be great. I started it but got caught up in the story (again) and did not do a good job of it.

It will be great even if we crowd source the list with mine as the starting point.

My list is HERE

Ideally, I would like to do a road trip of all the places, including Sri Lanka, sometime in Nov-Dec .

There is a detailed google map for this put together by fans in a ponniyin selvan yahoogroup. Many of the towns mentioned are in the adjoining Thanjavur, Trichy, Villupuram, Madurai and Salem districts.

I’m open to a road trip covering at least these districts, not sure how I’d drive to Sri Lanka though :)

Let us plan for this, Andy and any others interested. Some part of this route at least should be quite doable over a long weekend.

All, I'm looking for the coordinates of "Maniharan Tunnel" and "Maniharan temple" in Cachar district of Assam. It's somewhere in the vicinity of Silchar, however, unable to find it anywhere. It's believed that Krishna had used the tunnel and is considered a "thrilling" place to visit for travelers.

Can someone from around Silchar pls help ?

It is about 5 km from the Bhubaneshwar temple. I guess the Bhubaneshwar temple, one of the oldest in Silchar, should fit the bill for your temple. The temple itself is a 17 km walk up a hill. https://www.tourmyindia.com/states/a...ar-temple.html

Sir thanks. That's the trouble though - I need the coordinates of the tunnel and the temple. The best I could get to is that it is 5 kms from the Bhuvan mahadev temple.

As it is in a hilly area you had better take a local guide.

Thought of sharing a couple of unusual places/temples :

1. Jarasandha Temple behind Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati. Dedicated to Jarasandha and has a murthy of his "split" body. Location : https://goo.gl/maps/NjDnSAzqrnV351sP6

2. Jarasandha Ka Akhara, Near Rajgir, Bihar. Is the Akhara where the long battle spanning days was fought between Bheema and Jarasandha : https://goo.gl/maps/gJn7U9ctstYoAwfB9

3. Konhara Ghat or Kaun Hara Ghat : the place of the mythical fight between the elephant and the crocodile as stated in the Gajendra Moksham. Location : https://goo.gl/maps/w1j2MC3fFkC82EY49 near Hajipur, Bihar and the ghat has a statue depicting the Gaj-Graah situation.

4. Bhaluni Dham : Thought to be the place where Daksha performed the Yagna ( where he didn't invite Shiva to insult him ) : Bhaluni Dham, Bihar : Location : https://goo.gl/maps/oWCLE6RhLH7nX7Pj9

Interesting to see a thread on this. I'm in for such a tour.
Quite interesting links on Ponniyin Selvan tours I got from Google search.

1. https://www.thenewsminute.com/articl...ozha-era-60229

2. https://www.vikatan.com/arts/travel/...-selvan-tour-2

There maybe many more. But I think this PS road trip is interesting and must be done !
