Guys I have a ticket in shatabdi for Delhi - Chandigarh for tomorrow but planning to cancel that and take my Baleno( 2005 model).

Has someone been to chandigarh (from delhi) recently. How are the road conditions now. What do you all suggest should I take the shatabdi or my car considering I'll be the only 1 driving it.

Chandigarh to delhi is good till Ambala, after which the 35kms are bad. Can certainly be done by car in 4.5 hours easily.
I go to Ludhiana, via Ambala, so know the route till there.
Another bottleneck is Panipat, but if you avoid rush hours its not a problem.

tsk : the four-laning of ambala-chandigarh shd be done very soon.
compen : i think the traffic is diverted.. at ambala continue on NH-1 (ludhaina side).. a few kms after that, there is right turn which goes n joins the ambala-chd highway. but u may have traffic issues at the zirakpur crossing (from where a right goes to kalka)

But that road is hell due to NHAI making flyovers and all, and you will get stuck in a jam.
So the alternate route we took while coming back was Via Rajpura.
So you go towards Amritsar/Ludhiana from Ambala, and do not take the chd road.
As you hit Rajpura, take right at the main traffic signal towards Zirakpur(chandigarh road).
From Zirakpur you head towards Himachal.
It will be around 15-20kms extra along with toll tax of 45rs, but its worth it as you bypass most of the crazy construction zone.
Ya,thats the best route to follow to avoid the construction chaos and jams
and the road from Rajpura till Zirakpur is smooth

i did follow the same 2 weeks ago when i went to Shimla.just make sure u dont miss the main traffic signal in Rajpura from where u have to take right cos going straight will take u towards Jallandhar/Ludhiyana.

For those planning HIMACHAL trips ( Except KALKA- SHIMLA )
Drive from Delhi to Ambala -200 km

From Ambala, continue on NH-1 towards RAJPURA - LUDHIANA.

Just before toll gate (turn right & reach BANUR red light (17 km).

Turn right for Zirakpur/ Kalka/ Chandigarh

Go straight to KHARAR ( 16 km ) & hit Chandigarh - Ropar road.

Turn left for Ropar - Kiratpur - Bilaspur - Mandi - Kullu
OR Kiratpur - Nangal - Una - Kangra - Dharmsala

Total distance Delhi - Ambala - Banur - Kharar = 245 km
Delhi - Ambala - Chandigarh - Kharar = 285 km
One can save 40km & 1 hour's journey even when the ambala - chd. road becomes operational

Road between Ambala and Chandigarh/Panchkula/Kalka is much better - as per someone who drove on it 2 days ago.

Here is what my friend Monish said:
" Is close to being through for most of the parts. However FOR NIGHT TRAVEL PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL. The road may abruptly "change lanes" with little or NO signs - markings or otherwise. The traffic diversions at the major flyvoer (most
likely Zirkhpur - not sure) are still on, and may remain so for a while. On
the whole, travelling through Chandigarh than take the BP, seemed a lot more
acceptable than before."

The Tribune, Chandigarh, India - Haryana

Panipat flyover to open on July 17
Tribune News Service
Panipat, July 9
It’s official now. The much-awaited Panipat flyover on the National Highway No 1 is finally going to be inaugurated on July 17.

The flyover that was expected to be opened for vehicular traffic in the first week of June got delayed due to certain reasons. The bridge would now be inaugurated by union minister for shipping, road and transport T. R. Baalu and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The flyover has been completed eight months ahead of schedule and had been awaiting a final nod from the government agencies. The construction of the Rs 325-crore flyover had been executed by L&T Panipat Elevated Corridor Pvt Ltd on a build-operate-transfer basis. The 3.4-km elevated stretch would ease traffic congestions in the city and is likely to reduce travel time between Delhi and Chandigarh by about 40 minutes.

However, the local residents of the city had expressed their dismay over the charging of toll from them even as they would not be using the bridge. In order to redress the grievance, the government had announced that only 25 per cent of toll would be charged from them.

Kumar saab! You are right. Actually, the flyover was completely ready in March'08 with toll gates, computers, security etc.
The prolonged delay in construction of DELHI - PANIPAT section of NH-1 caused NHAI to postpone the opening of this flyover. And last three months have witnessed very fast construction in this section of road due to pressure from Mr.Baalu.

Try Ambala= Derabassi-Ramgarh-Panchkula_Parwanoo. to go to Ramgarh take left before the Derabassi flyover go about 300 mts, take a uturn from below the bridge and come back about 200 mts and turn left on the road.Ramgarh is about 7 kms from here and thereon to Panchkula and turn right onto Kalka after the bridge on Ghaggar. The road is excellent except the 500 mts of going around the bridge at Derabassi.
