Road from Ambala-Chandigarh has improved now with just 2-3 short bad patches in between.

Pinjore-Kalka Stretch on Nh-22 is a nightmare,I always get goosebumps whenever i think of driving through that stretch

WE started from Dharampur at 11:45 and reached Delhi at 10:45. Thats 11 hours. 4 hours spent in jams.
2+ at Kalka Parwanoo and 1.5 at Delhi border.
In 11 hours I could probably drive to Joshimath!

@tsk1979 - Did you happen to travel on Sunday or was it on Saturday from Dharampur? Because I started on Saturday from Kufri at 3PM and was at Chandigarh at 7PM. Did not face any jams at Kalka/Parwanoo although that stretch was pathetic. Guess there was a lot of traffic on Sunday (am assuming in your case).

I started from Dharampur at 11:45am
You guys probably hit Kalka in the evening, so no issues for you. Moreover most people return on sunday and not saturday!

One possible route to take if you want to avoid a jam at Kalka-parwanoo border is to go via sector 4 parwanoo. The roads are a bit bad but saves you a lot of time. The road branches off to the left at the curve immediately after the railway road crossing in Kalka. Also when you are going from Pinjore take the left diversion (marked now) and you can reach the Railway road crossing in no time as compared to the choked main bazaar. I came back from Shimla on 22nd and was caught int he jam for about 30 minsutes, though while going it was another story.

The highway till Shimla is doable and is in a OK state. But you do need to find out from friends or anyone else if there have been any recent landslides or else you might find yourself stuck for no fault of yours.

Travelling at night is safe provided you have a reliable car. I did travel to Shimla two weeks back in the dead of the night and it was the most memorable drives I have ever done so far. Only worry I had was getting stuck if at all there was landslide. Because if it does happen, it can only be cleared during the day times mostly !

@shaken: Go in peace brother, it would be a memorable drive. Just keep your eyes peeled when you go through the Barog byepass towards Solan as there might be a few unexpected bad stretches of mud and slush. Just take it easy and you wont have any problems.

Thanks Dragonov & wanderernomad.

I will be travelling in my dependable WagonR, just upgraded to alloys and Bridgestone Potenza G3, Philips Rally 100/90 and Hella 450 fog lights. So I am pretty much set for the night ride.
