Indian tourists to pay Rs.1000/- fee for Bhutan travel

Now, Indian, Bangladeshi & Maldivian tourists will have to pay Rs. 1000/- as sustainable fee to enter Bhutan for tourism. Also this probably comes in light following some instances of travelers causing certain law and order problems as well as being disrespectful of local customs and traditions.

Bhutan’s plan to implement the fee was discussed during a visit by the country’s foreign minister Tandi Dorji to India in November. Today it was announced formally.

Not bad. Looks like i can still travel and visit Bhutan in the near future.

re: Indian tourists to pay Rs.1000/- fee for Bhutan travel

Super glad to read this news! I was planning to travel to Bhutan this summer and the recent news/rumors about them implementing the $250 per day charge for all tourists was bothering me too much. With this news, I can still keep the hope alive.

I read through the article, it looks like the said RS 1000/- is a one-time fee rather than per day.

Thanks again for sharing!

Completely fine (no pun intended) with the fee being charged. Just don't understand how that would shut-up trouble makers. For anyone travelling out of country, 1000/- is peanuts. In fact this fee, sort of, gives "looking for some fun tourists" a sense of entitlement. Hope the Bhutan govt. doesn't let them go without teaching a lesson.

re: Indian tourists to pay Rs.1000/- fee for Bhutan travel

I think its more of a step to restrict free-flowing travel from WB, NE states during weekends. A group of 4 in a car will now cost 4k more. That's the fuel budget of many young weekenders.

Anyhow, if you consider how beautiful and pure Bhutan is, I think the existing charge of $65 for non-Indians should be levied for Indians too, and the trip will be easily worth the amount for serious tourists.

I don’t think this 1000 rupee fee is going to make any difference. It is simply too less. If the idea was to discourage the bagpacking Indian tourist on a budget, it should have been more in tune of Rs 5000/- per head. Right now, I believe everyone who is coming all the way to Bhutan can manage an extra grand. And yes, there will be a sense of entitlement that I’ve paid entry money, I can do whatever I want.

I think the idea is to restrict large groups. True an extra thousand will not make much difference individually, but in a large group of 10-15, that's a considerable difference. And with all due respect to group tours, from what I've seen, those are usually the ones that disturb the peace and litter the most.

re: Indian tourists to pay Rs.1000/- fee for Bhutan travel

The news article is not very clear on whether it is Rs. 1000 per day per person, or Rs. 1000 per person for the entire trip. Was planning on a road trip in the upcoming summer holidays and was not very happy with the prospect of paying an additional Rs.30k for a family of 4 (assuming 7 days in the kingdom).

Great news! I wrote of Bhutan from my wishlist after rumor of 250$ per day for tourists. Now Bhutan is added back in my wish list and will do it before Bhutan Authority changes their mind. My kind of Budget Traveller welcomes this move.

Cleanliness and civic sense comes from within. Entry fee will have no impact on those tourists who are not civic literate. It looks more like an attempt to curb occasional casual strolling kind of tourists entering from India and also towards increasing revenue earnings. 1000 per entry is good enough to discourage a casual stroll over the border.

It's still affordable. It's negligible when you fare it against the memories and experience you'll get. However, Bhutan has put their message loud and clear. Respect their culture, laws and ethics. And why only Bhutan, it's applicable to all the places.

Recent incidents involving Indians have been woeful.

Re: Indian tourists to pay Rs.1000/- fee for Bhutan travel

Some of us have been insensitive.

And crass.

And the Bhutanese ( rightly so) haven't taken it kindly.

Still, it's a (relatively) small price to pay to experience sights and sounds from a beautiful nation with a rich heritage and culture.

Cheers !
