My favorite in north India is Wildflower Hall at Kufri. Every time I visit, this property just grows on me. Straight outta Fairy Tale.

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

1. Ananda Himalayas

Everything about this property is magical.

2. Holiday Inn Cavelossim,Goa

Pleasantly surprised by the property and it's private beach. I would rate this over Leela Goa although the food at Leela was way too good.

3. Novotel Vizag

This was a work trip and I got so impressed by Vizag's coastline. The infinity pool in this hotel gives stunning views of the coastline. Very impressive. Their gym has great views as well.

Apart from these the following have impressed me.

1. Amanvana, Coorg: The hotel is decent but their trek in the Kaveri was one of the best I had been to. Could be seasonal but was a pleasant memory
2. Wildflower Shimla: Already mentioned above
3. Leela Kovalam: Already mentioned above

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

Another hidden Gem is the Swapnagandha / Wildernest Resort in Chorla Ghat near Goa. Its deep in the forest, has a stunning infinity pool and spectacular views. The weather year-round is great along with amazing hospitality. Please note that this property is in the middle of forest with very limited mobile coverage and creepy crawlies around (experienced first hand)!

A video of the resort from youtube.

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

One of the most unique places we've stayed at is the Barapani Boat House located on Umiyam lake in Meghalaya.

Its a floating house moored on shore of the lake. The views are fantastic. And in the mornings and night, the whole lake is covered in fog which gives a beautiful effect to the light of the cars passing in the distance. And whenever a boat passed on the lake, the entire house bobbed up and down in the water.

On the downside, the facilities are very basic for the price charged. And when we visited in Dec 2019, the property needed a lot of maintenance and was showing its age.

Some pics below

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

Excellent thread.

There are a few places I can say but this is the most recent one I've been to just before the lockdown.

Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations-images-2.jpeg

Ramblers Nesting at Darjeeling. I don't have the pics in my mobile so I'm posting one from the internet. It's not a hotel but a budget homestay but got to say the location and views were excellent. Also I found most of the HPTDC hotels have great view.

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

Look up Blanket Spa (I know the name sucks) Munnar, it is stunning. In violation of a bunch of environmental laws I think the hotel somehow gained access to building it on a cliff and literally over a waterfall.

An image from Google of a room similar to what we had stayed in.

Stunning does not cover it even a fraction of what it is.

Be warned though room rates are sky high but it is the food that's monumentally expensive. Worth it though imo.

2) fruitsnbeans Dindugal - a very unassuming homestay type in the middle of a coffee, pepper plantation.

3) this is not even a Hotel but a tea plantation (run by the Tata group), Meghamalai. Isolated, stunning vistas in a tea plantation.

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

Recently we went to Destiny Resort outside Ooty. Awesome views, once you reach there, which is an adventure in itself. On top of that, it is pet friendly and so, our dog could roam around off leash and swim in the lake.

I miss HPTDC place in Sarhaan, which I had visited in 2005 or so, which I don't even have digital images of.

Club Mahindra at Tungi Lake is also awesome. Will dig up the images from 2017 trip.

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

I am not sure if it really qualifies as a Hotel? But the house boats at Srinigar are an amazing experience.

We stayed on one of these beauties for a long weekend. There was a bit of unrest ongoing in the area at the time. So we did not venture out much. We just made the most of our amazing house boat and the view. Lots to see on the lake, all day long, Stunning sun sets.

We had food brought/served three times a day. Very simple, but excellent quality and very good and pleasant service. Really enjoyed our time there. We spend some time in the mountain too, can’t remember which hotel though? Went up with the chairlift, all the way to the top!

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

Fantastic thread idea! Many wish-list mentions here, such as the Oberoi Amarvilas, Brunton Boatyard, Taj Lake Palace, Oberoi Wildflower Hall etc. I am more of an urban-vista admirer and am partial to sea-view places. Nothing like a signature city view with a great location for people watching.

My favourite property so far has been The Oberoi Mumbai! Perfect Marine Drive location and bought back memories of my first days in the Maximum City - broke chai-sutta days when I was studying at TISS and post first date walks when I was working in Ballard Estate.

Stayed there last in January 2018 - the only month in Mumbai with likeable weather. Walked from NCPA to Bachelor's and back and lived that enviable SoBo life. The cherry on the cake is Oberoi's service, IMO the best in India.

Another favorite property is the Leela Palace in Chennai. It is ironic that it is the only hotel within Chennai metro to offer 5* sea-facing rooms. Not a fan of the Leela service, but the hotel sure does feel over the top. Also love their Chinese restaurant, China XO.

Also a fan of The Park, Kolkata. Bang in the heart of the City of joy. Have booked the Oberoi Grand for this Christmas.

Oh and among the nature-view places that are nice, Taj Coorg has a gorgeous jacuzzi overlooking the coffee plantations. They also have a strawberry farm that you can go picking!

Re: Indian Hotels at one-of-a-kind locations

For pure location alone (and pretty much nothing else!), the Govt-run places are hard to beat. Dak Bungalows, PWD rest houses, Forest rest houses, Circuit houses, and the state TDC-run places (Tourism Development Corporations) usually have some awesome locations.

The downsides are they are usually badly maintained, badly run, and almost impossible to book! Even the TDC hotels, though they are supposed to be hotels don't really care about making a profit, so don't care if you book or not! Another major upside (for me at least!) are you'll mostly have the place to yourself, since most people usually avoid such places, so no noisy family groups!

Have stayed at a few by pure chance and have always loved the experience, truly atmospheric places! Two in particular stand out- the Forest rest house at Dhanaulti while we were on a govt-supported activity and the PWD rest house at Walong while we were on a bike trip through Arunachal.

If you have some Govt-official contacts and don't care too much for creature comforts for a couple of nights, don't miss the chance to stay at one of these places.
