Day trips for foodies from Delhi-NCR?

Hope all of you are doing well. I am a huge foodie and can't resist venturing out for a good meal despite Covid concerns. I do ensure bare minimum hygiene and sanitation standards these days though. With winter in full swing over north India, this is the perfect time to be a glutton and hide that winter fat under sweaters and jackets

I was hoping to source some recommendations for foodie weekend long drives to destination restaurants or dhabas. I am not an experienced highway driver and will be undertaking these with my girlfriend, so suggestions for family-friendly destinations which can be driven to and back before sunset would be much appreciated. Historical sites or good shopping options would be a bonus!

A few places that I can recommend are:

1. Paranthas at Murthal Dhabas - Amrik Sukhdev/Haveli
2. Sarson ka Saag & Makki ki roti at Neelkanth Star Dhaba, Karnal
3. Under the Neem, Sohna Road - beautiful outdoor cafe with organic veggie garden inside a niche property

Try the Shikwa Havali. Just outside Delhi

http://shikwa-heritagehomestay.com

We have been there several times, with friends, enjoying the atmosphere and good food.

Thanks for the recommendation, Jeroen! Have also noted your suggestion for Mud Fort Kuchesar from the recent Hotels thread.

I haven't been to Under the Neem, however my wife has and she was super impressed especially with the ambience. The plans for Murthal Dhabas got shelved after the news of 100 plus waiters getting COVID positive few months back.

However am planning a day trip to Lucknow for some galaoti kababs soon during the year end break and also stretch the legs of the Rapid as bonus.

The place looks fantastic. So you can just visit the restaurant there ? Or its only for people lodging there ?

Can you get some packed for me pretty please? I'll collect from anywhere in Delhi.

Prepaid request.

Do note that the there seems to be construction going on around Murtha and the NH up until Panipat is a mess. Took me 3 hours to navigate on last month's Delhi - Chandigarh trip.

Your comment brings back memories of a foodie trip to Lucknow from 2018. My top picks in the city would be (not in this order):

1. Ram Asray ka Malai Paan

2. Galauti at Sekhawat (though this pic is from Tunday)

3. Biryani at Mashi Biryani World (Yes!)

4. Fine Awadhi meal at the Renaissance Hotel

5. Kachodi at Netrams

6. Malaiyyo/Makhan Malai at Chowk

7. Nihari Kulcha at Raheem's

Also for great Awadhi food in NCR try Kitchens of Awadh in Gurgaon & delivering out of Defence Colony. I've searched far and wide for a cheaper competitor to Dum Pukht and these guys come closest.

Great conversation. First non-automotive thread on TBHP that I rated 5 stars. In addition to what others said, try these on NH1:
  • Ghat Ghat Ka Pani - Ambala
  • Zhilmil dhabha - Karnal
I will be surely following the recommendations here

This used to be our go-to dhaba before the flyover that bypasses it was built. The clientele and the quality took a hit after that. Haven't tried it recently, maybe it is back to its glory days.

Yup I faced the same along with the Farmer blockade because of which I was diverted into Meerut last weekend during our trip to Simla.

I am salivating just looking at the pictures. Need to plan something fast. Also will try out Kitchens of Awadh after the border opens up properly.

Yes that's the one. Last time I was there a couple of years back and now there are 2 or 3 other dhabas who have sprung up by the same name.
Cannot comment on the gentry in recent times as I have always been on a bike trip with friends whenever I stopped here. So did not have to worry about that.

But whenever with family, I always stick to Havelis. Gives me peace of mind on safety even though the food might not be as lip-smacking as more authentic places around.

Totally Agree! This was our fixed stop for so many years during our Delhi trips. But Quality, as well as hygiene, has taken a big hit in the last couple of years. Or maybe it's just that the competition has upped their game considerably.

Though taste of food is still good, but the overall sense of cleanliness of dining areas isn't great shakes nowadays. And that of the restrooms/washrooms (equally important in a family trip), is literally down the gutter!

Regards,
Jaspreet Singh

You may also try lunch buffet at Neemrana Fort Palace Hotel, Neemrana or at Heritage Village Resorts, Manesar. While Neemrana offers you a proper luxury 15th century fort feeling, the food is tastier and relatively affordable at Heritage Resorts.

Shall check out Heritage Village Resorts. Neemrana is on my wishlist though whenever I do a Delhi - Jaipur trip.

I tried Neemrana's Tijara property last year - as you said about their main place, great views but meh food.

Also, apologies for repeating the Malai Paan picture in my previous post under Netram's. Here's the Kachodi and Jalebi from Netram's in Lucknow.

Old Rao Dhaba near Hero plant in Dharuhera. Recommended for vegetarians. Haven't been there in long time but food quality was good when I last visited.
