It is reliable & a safer vehicle on the highways, more so as you are planning to drive at night

Well if you have a new safari(3.0 or 2.2) take it. I didn't know whether you have the old TCIC or the DICOR. No probs. 10-12 hours safari will of course be better bet, and will work out cheaper.

I guess you can go via Gaggal airport to Chamba, which is right next door to Khajjar.
But for Dharmashala Mcleodganj, its always better to do the palampur circuit

Delhi - Ambala - Kharar - Ropar - KiratPur - Anandpur Sahib - Nangal - Una - Amb - Mubarakpur - Bharwain(Chintpurni) - Dehra - Ranital - Kangra - Dharamshala

this route looks shorter to me i.e 465 KMS

Please provide the details of the other route as well i.e Palampur Route

and which route of them is more fun to drive and pictorious.

Thanks

Chakki bridge is broken these days!

Mandi -Draman - Jogindernagar - Baijnath - Palampur - Chamunda - Yol - Dharmsala is a long route.

BTW, i was asking tsk1979 ( the moderator) about the shorter route!

A 8.10km strech before Kiratpur is really bad,one can't do more than 10km/hr.

Some more routes:

Ambala - Ropar - Balachaur - Hosiarpur - Chintpurni - Dehra- Kangra - D'sala
OR
Hosiarpur - Dasuya - Mukerian - Talwara - Jasur - Gaggal - D'sala

The former is the route for covering the distance in shortest time!

Recently did Dharamsala to Dharamsala Macleodganj and back. so updating this thread.
Delhi to Dharamsala
Delhi-Ambala-Chandigarh (250ish Kms) Good 4 lane road. However 4 laning going on after leaving clover leaf fly over on ORR for about 20-30 kms so that takes extra time. The road is smooth but not an expressway meaning the traffic from sides gets on at will(tractors, cycles etc) . Constant 90 kmph possible and should get an average speed of 70 kms/hr.

Chandigarh- Dharamsala (250ish kms)
Chandigarh-Kharar-Ropar(Roopnagar)-Kiratpur-Bilaspur-Hamirpur-Kangra-Dharamsala
Madness till Bilaspur due to 2 lane, work in progress traffic etc.Kiratpur to Bilaspur -swarghat is agonising due to long line of trucks crawling on hill road enroute to Manali with very less possibility of overtaking them. However after swarghat the road is two lane on winding foothills. Tarmac is smooth, traffic is less, picturesque villages enroute till kangra. If only I did'nt have to endure Chandigarh-Bilaspur route. thereafter it is hill road to Macleodganj

Better option is to turn towards Anandpur sahib from Kiratpur and go vis Nangal-Una-Amb-dera Gopipur-Dharamsala. I did'nt try it but people told me. it should take lesser time.

Return
Dharamsala-Dera Gopipur-Kangra-Hoshiarpur-Phagwra(GT Rd)-Ludhiana-Ambala-Delhi. Foothills till Hoshiarpur around 120 kms them smooth GT road til Delhi. But you have to ask around quite a lot to reach ludhiana while traversing through towns enroute, lot of traffic and wastage of time at Phagwara and Ludhiana due to jams.

So if you can avoid the traffic and want scenic route then go through Bilaspur Hamirpur route. Even Chandigarh kiratpur Anandpur Sahib-Nangal-Una-Amb should be scenic, but avoid ludhiana Phagwara route due to traffic.
