Re: MM Hills road condition?

Bumping up a really old thread which didn't get any replies since 6 years.

I was planning on a drive to MM hills sometime this weekend or next weekend, from Bangalore. Could someone familiar with this route please help me on how the road conditions are between Kollegal and MM Hills, and between MM Hills and Mettur dam??

https://maps.google.co.in/maps?saddr...&sz=10&t=m&z=9

I am actually driving here just for leisure and not on pilgrimage, but considering this (MM hills) is a popular pilgrimage spot, eateries should be in abundance on the hill if I'm not mistaken. Any advice would be helpful

I am planning to travel with family from Bangalore to MM Hills in mid-Dec 2013. Was choosing bween car and KSRTC Sarige bus. Am considering an overnight stay if by bus (bcoz return bus timings are such; Bus departs MM Hills 8.30pm, so not convenient), and a day trip if by car. Bcoz a day trip would be too hectic for elderly parents, I am leaning towards travelling by bus and including an overnight stay.

Any thoughts? How are the roads? Is bus journey safe? Any good hotels to stay there? I couldnt find any at makemytrip.com

Bus jounery wont work. You have to drive on your own. And I think you can be back by evening. Roads around MM hills are quite bad even today.

The way to go :

Drive on NH209 (Kanakpura Road) till Kollegal. At Kollegal you should see a road left which would go to MM Hills. Another 4-5km further on this road, there would one more fork. Take the left of the fork which goes to MM hills. It should be about 200km one way. In case you feel driving back would be too far, then after visiting the temple, driving further to Mettur you can break for the night. The road till the base is pretty good. But the ghat roads are quite pathetic. Buses I think you would rarely get. Hence my suggestion to drive on your own.

Re: MM Hills road condition?

Hi

I had just been to this place a month ago.
Its best to drive as the roads almost all the way are good, except for a few km's towards Kollegal from Maddur. The road from the Base all the way to the town on the hills are also much much better.

The roads once the hills start are also quite good, the road in MM hills town is fully concretized(very clean too) and are the best.

I would drive here as on the way you can visit manay places, all River Cauvery related falls and spots. On the way back you can go from MM hills to Hogenekkal(Karnataka side - You cannot cross over to TN in car at this place).

If you can avoid goign to MM hills on amavasya and festival days , then getting a decent accomodation is no problem.

If you have kids take some banana and buns and enjoy feeding the monkeys on the hills - I am sure the kids will really enjoy, I did.
If you are not able to drive then you can go by bus, and if you are willing to break journey then their are enough private buses all the time.

Re: MM Hills road condition?

I enjoyed watching my son feeding the monkeys.
Its really fun to see those monkeys taking food from our hands(not snatching) but they just take the food, they are used to many people offering food. We just have to be carefull with other stuff in the car.

I will post some pictures this weekend.

This is very good to note! Can you also mention if the roads are good all the way onto TN via ghats towards Mettur. Have you driven to that side?

Re: MM Hills road condition?

I have driven upto Hogenekkal falls from MM hills town. The roads were OK in parts. A stretch of 30 kms was very good as this was developed under Pradhan mantri gram sadak yojana, It was upto a village where Veerappan used to be very active. I even saw couple of wild deers enroute.

The hills are very steep but I was able to make it with out issues in my i10 Automatic.

I plan to to ride to hogenekkal some time soon. I want to go MM hills also. Google suggests that I can take a ferry to the Karnataka side. Doesn't the ferry allow cars, so that they can reach the other side of the falls?

It won't work for a car. But for a bike maybe yes.

The best option is :

Hogenakkal-Pennagaram-Mecheri-Mettur-MM Hills. And come back via Kollegal.
