re: Delhi -> Chennai

AS the others have already said, going on the West India route means 4-laned roads all the way and very fast speeds, except for some sections like Thane-Surat and Jaipur-Delhi which are currently facing heavy congestion thanks to road widening work.

You can trace this route in teh attached file. I have mentioned hotels and all landmarks en route. The same file also has part of the route via Nagpur, although it has detours to Khajuraho and Bandhavgarh.

Surprisingly, the central India route has shown tremendous improvement as 4-laning work has made good progress.
Bangalore-Hyderabad is super fast
Hyderabad-Nagpur is fast, has some incomplete sections
Nagpur-Laknadon is improving in MH, great in MP
Laknadon-Sagar has many sections complete now, no bad road sections, but lots of detours in sections where work is still going on
Sagar-Jhansi has lots of complete sections
Jhansi-Gwalior is still work in progress but no great fears
Gwalior-Agra is complete except for one small section
Agra to Delhi is the old 4-laned fast road

Therefore, it is a toss between some incomplete roads of the Central India route and the busy traffic on the West India route.
Maybe you should go via West India and return via Central India.

On WI route, doing in 2 days in quite a task. You can reach Bombay on Day 1, but to keep up the same tempo and do Bombay-Delhi on Day 2 is going to be very challenging. In current road conditions, doing Bombay-Delhi in under 20 hours is impossible, I would estimate it at 22-24 hours.

On the CI route, doing in 2 days is not feasible at all. Assuming you reach Hyderabad via NH5 on Day 1 (via Nellore & Narasaropet), you can push onto Adilabad on Day 1 but from there, Day 2 you should reach Gwalior at best.

re: Delhi -> Chennai

Thanks a ton hvkumar for your inputs. I was thinking about it and you said it, I'd do west India onward and return via central India.

The excel sheet is very informative. I shall contact when I close to taking up the journey if I require anymore details.

Delhi to Chennai - Road Trip - Help required.

Hi Everyone,

I am shifting from Delhi to Chennai this month end and was planning to drive my car down to Chennai. I will have a friend for company but will be the solo driver. This is the plan I have chalked out:

Day 1 : Delhi to Udaipur (approx 680 Km)
Day 2 : Udaipur to Daman (approx 610 Km)
Day 3 : Daman to Mumbai (approx 180 Km)
Day 4 : Mumbai to Goa (approx 570 Km)
Day 5 : Stay in Goa
Day 6 : Goa to Bangalore (approx 570 Km)
Day 7 : Bangalore to Chennai (approx 350 KM)

So its a 3000 Km Drive in 7 days. I think its doable but am not sure about it. Can you help me with the condition of the roads?

Also, is it possible to drive for so long at a stretch. The max I have done in one day is around 500 Kms, that too on mountain roads. But I have never driven for long distances at a stretch, day after day. Anything I should be aware about before I embark on this?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Regds,
Paritosh

Re: Delhi to Chennai - Road Trip - Help required.

Paritosh,

Mostly OK.
You can drive till Ahmedabad on Day-1 (950 kms)
Day-2 till Mumbai outskirts or even Pune. (Mumbai - 450 kms) or (Pune - 600 kms)
Day-3 Goa. So you will get another day at Goa.

Day-6 - if you start early the you can reach Chennai by Day-6 itself.

The roads are good all the way. Key is to start early.

All the best for your trip.

Road condition very good to excellent. Delhi-Mumbai circuit is 4-lane.
Mumbai-Goa, mostly 4-lane with a few sections of good 2-lane.

Goa-BLR-Chennai is a brilliant sector to drive.

Hi Paritosh, I don't see why you need to route yourself through Ahmedabad > Mumbai > Bangalore, when you can drive direct via Jhansi > Nagpur > Hyderabad (http://goo.gl/maps/sToud) and save on at least 700 km of driving distance. The roads are pretty okay on this route too, and I don't foresee you travelling for more than 5 days, even including a day's break somewhere. Or is it specifically Goa that you are heading to first?

You didn't mention what car you would be driving.

Daman is hardly an exciting place to stop over!

You can trace the detailed route plan in these files here:

For Goa-Hubli-Bangalore-Madras:

Well, what can I say... reaching Chennai is not that important as the journey. Actually, I am joining a "start-up" and have this feeling that this may be my last road trip for a long time to come. So, I want to make it a memorable one.

Also, I will be driving a Maruti Swift.

All right then, how about including Orchha, Khajuraho, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Bhedaghat, the Char Minar and some fantastic biryani on your roadtrip!

A perfect time to sight wildlife too!

Bon voyage, whichever route you choose.

If it's the NH8 you choose, we might just cross paths at the end of the month.

Wow!! This is awesome info. Thanks a ton for compiling all this.

BTW, I also feel Daman is not worth staying over. But driving 800 Km at a stretch will most likely be impossible for me. Can you suggest any other place in between Udaipur and Mumbai for a break?

I would love that... but my new employers, unfortunately, won't. :(

If you are driving anytime in the last week of March let me know. BTW, which direction will you be going on? If you are travelling from Delhi to Mumbai, maybe we can drive together.

Honestly, Udaipur-Bombay is an easy all-day drive.
There are nicer beaches south of BOmbay.
However, if you wish to stop over at some beach place before Bombay, try Bordi south of Daman-north of Dahanu-turn off NH8 at Talasari beach which is a quiet and nice place to be in.

I checked out Bordi on google and it seems to be a great place. Thanks for the input. Now, I will stay there instead of Daman.

Route: Delhi to Chennai via Kolkata

I'm planning to drive from Delhi to Chennai on the GQ via Kolkata.
I'd done the Chennai-Mumbai-Delhi trip a couple of years ago, and want to complete the quadrilateral. Any advice, please? The NHAI site says that the Delhi-Kolkata stretch is 100% complete, and the Kolkata-Chennai stretch is 98.93% complete. Has anyone does this route recently? Anything to avoid? All tips most welcome!

Road-widening works [4 to 6 lanes] are in progress in many stretches on NH 5 with good diversions from Vijayawada to Chennai. When I drove on this stretch in April/May 2012, we were diverted through the town called Rambha [yes, that's the name of the town in Odisha near Chilika lake] with some railway level-crossing resulting in traffic jam.
