Please note the road you took is the real NH844 which will come up in due course of time. The one I suggested is a SH. Its good to for now. Once the 844 is fully up, that would also bypass Hosur and Attibele toll totally.

Re: Bangalore to Coimbatore : Route Queries

While starting from Bangalore at around 4.30 AM or 5.00 AM, what should be the best route to Krishnagiri? Via Attibele - Hosur - Shoolagiri or via Hosur - Rayakottai ?

Start slightly later, just to make sure you have enough day light and the you can take the Rayakottai route. But please note, while taking this route you have to wait to reach Thoppur for your breakfast break. If you have to start at 0430 or so, take the Krishnagiri route.

The destination mentioned is Krishnagiri. So, why take Rayakottai?! unless the intention is to take a longer and less traveled route.

Oops sorry! I naturally assumed Salem and beyond. For Krishnagiri its only Hosur road as the option.

My apologies, I should have added more info in my earlier post. I am travelling to Pondicherry and need to reach the French town by 10.30 AM. So I assume I should start from my home in Bellandur around 4.30 AM (considering 6 hours travel time). So I should take the Hosur - Shoolagiri - Krishnagiri route?

You can check the Pondicherry route thread for latest updates. You should stick to Krishnagiri-Tiruvannamalai route.

Then all the above suggestions are void. You have to take the Hosur-Krishnagiri route only.

Re: Bangalore to Coimbatore : Route Queries

Took the Kelamangalam road as per suggestion and definitely a much better alternative.

Previous week started from Indiranagar at 7:30 AM and reached Salem at 11:30 AM with 10 Minutes break in Shoolagiri

Route - Indiranagar - Madiwala - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem

Today started from Indiranagar at 6:20 AM and reached Salem at 9:35 AM with 25 Minutes break in Saisangeet Dharmapuri

Route - Indiranagar - Madiwala - Attibelle - Kelamangalam - Rayakottai - Dharmapuri - Salem

Route Condition: Attibelle to Madiwala has a mix of wide two lane and narrow 4 lane with no lane markings and few big Speed Breakers. Hosur outer side near TVS Plant has mild lorry traffic but apart from that the road is free for most part and condition is good.

From Rayakottai to Dharmapuri except 4 diversions the road is fully 4 lane and very light in traffic.

Also this route saves 20 KMS compared to the route via Krishnagiri.

But take this route only in the day due to the diversions and lack of White marking in the narrow 4 lane road of the Kelamangalam side.

But during the day this route saves around 25 to 45 mins solid.

One still needs to exercise caution till Rayakottai. While the road is getting there on the 4-lane completion (I mean Hosur-Kelamangalam-Rayakottai), it still is an internal road with lots of 2-wheeler and people and humps.

As regards to 844 itself I see there is substantial work pending from Neralur to Rayakottai. The Rayakottai town itself has a couple of railway overbridge pending which would take time. I have not seen any work happening there as yet when I went past couple of months back.

Yes I did return journey yesterday and nearby Rayakottai there are some places, I don't see any work started especially where the bypass starts. Should take more than a year to complete.

Re: Bangalore to Coimbatore : Route Queries

I will be visiting Coimbatore this long weekend, starting from JP Nagar on the morning of 16-Aug. Want to avoid the long weekend chaos in Attibele, Krishnagiri etc. Is it worth taking internal roads till Rayakottai: Bannerghatta road - Jigani/Anekal - turn into Attibele-Rayakotai road via Kelamangalam - Rayakottai. Normal route after that: Dharmapuri - Thoppur - Mecheri - Mettur - Avinashi - Coimbatore.

Last Sunday I was traveling on opposite side (Erode to Tumkur). Per suggestion in this thread, took Rayakotai > Kelamangalam > Athibelle, joining below fly over during afternoon. It was a breeze. However, since this is an internal road, it is kind of zig zag road with occasional traffic between Rayakotai to Athibelle. Dharmapuri to Rayakotai is proper 4 lanes with few diversions without any traffic.

Between Erode and Dharmapuri, unaware of road work at Salem, took Salem route and stuck up for 1 hr. around noon near Salem steel factory junction. I think I should have taken Mettur road.

It's definitely worth taking this option. Bannergatta-Jigani-Anekal is a 4-lane with a single lane bund road before Anekal. Jigani has a bypass too.

Anekal town exit to Thally road is actually a 4-lane till TN border and its a bliss to drive. Once you hit Thally road you need to towards Hosur and then get to the Hosur outer bypass. There on its the regular Kelamangalam-Rayakottai routing.

But please note it's some what messy inside Anekal town. However heading towards Thally road is easy. Usually the other way round is messier.
