No major problems on the roads to wayanad.
OT:Kochi airport is closed for operations till 06-Aug-13 due to heavy rains and waterlogging.Heavy rain conditions are predicted to stay till 08-Aug-13. |
Thanks a lot for the info :)
Completely avoid travel into Central Kerala.Thodupuzha,Pala,Vagamon etc report heavy flooding and landslides.Pamba river has apparently breached the banks at Ranni and Kozhencherry
The Vaavu Bali pooja at Aluva river has been shifted to a higher ground due to water levels increasing and the temple is submerged.Looks like the Periyar is flowing on the Kochi airport runway now:(

Guys a group is planning to drive down to Wayanad this weekend. One set from Chennai, and another from cochin. What is the status in Wayanad/ on the way?
Am in chennai these days, so kinda out of touch with the scene in KL... |
Jay - Wayanad has witnessed very heavy rains during last week and still continuing. Isn't it better to hold on till the sky is clear for a day or two?

Kottayam - Pala road is still safe. So as Pala - Thodupuzha main road. Interior roads could be issue prone.
Planning to travel to central Kerala (Adoor) on 8th Aug.
Which is the best route.
1) Bangalore -Kumli - Pathanamthitta route
2) Bangalore- Thenkasi - Punalur route (Shortest)
3) Bangalore- Salem- Perundurai- Pollachi- Thrissur- Ernakulam-Kayankulam- Adoor route ( Longest).
Please suggest the best one based on the current road conditions.
I am planning for route 2 , after hearing problems at Vandiperiyar.
Any body recently traveled in that route ?

Got the update from my friend who travelled yesterday in Kuravilangad - Pala - Ponkunnam - Mundakkayam - Kuttikkanam - Kattappana - Kambammettu - Cumbom - Dundigul - Salem - Bangalore
1) Good roads all the way till Kambammettu. Nothing seriously bad in this strtech, few rough stretches here and there between Kuttikkanam and Chappathu.
2) Kambammettu to Cumbom ghat road is bad.
3) Cumbom to Dindigul is good too. Only few diversions here and there due to widening but easily manageable.
4) Dindigul to Salem is again a breeze
5) Salem to Krishnagiri is fine too
6) Krishnagiri to Hosur has some diversions here and there due to flyover work etc
Another guy who came Kerala during last weekend via Kumily updated the below.
1) Cumbom to Kumily is good now. Few potholes in the ghat section though.
2) Kumily (KL Borded) till existing Vandiperiyar has potholes and bad stretches. But manageable.
3) Vandiperiyar to Kuttikkanam is good too. Only few potholes in Pambanar area etc.
Saw in the news that tourists / travelling is restricted at Athirapally and Vazhachal route for 3 days.

Both roads(212 & Nilambur) are in avg condition. With Nilambur route,if it rains real heavy then there is a possibility that the Nadugani ghats would face dislocation due to landslides. Moreover the roads on the nilambur route are quite narrow for my liking as opposed to NH212 which is slightly broader. However I have no update on the 212's present condition. |
Thanks Ranjit, Finally decided to go to Ooty itself and take the Gudalur Nilambur route to cherai. Hope things are ok around Nadugani ghat section still with all the rain pounding happening around kochi & Ikkudi area. Weather forecast online seems to suggest the heaviest rains are over and will probably subside now. Any other reliable source which could corroborate this?
Return trip would thru kollengode-pollachi route.

There is one more route via Munnar which is the shortest route with longest mountain drive.
Bangalore - Salem - Erode - Udumalpet - Munnar - Thodupuzha route
Up to Udumalpet its good. But not sure about the condition of remaining stretch given the fact that Idukki district received highest rain fall this week.

udumulpet-munnar road is closed afaik due to a landslide at nyamakadu- marayoor.there is an update in this thread or in the munnar thread. No news if its open now or not.
A friend of mine has a planned trip to Munnar over the independence day weekend, plan is to fly to Kochi airport and then travel to Munnar by road.
Is there any idea on the road condition to Munnar from Kochi, please share. Would it be risky to venture out via Adimaly route because of the rains, should we suggest the Chinnar route from Coimbatore instead?

hopefully both the roads should be open by then.adimaly route is closed,no news yet on whether the chinnar route is open yet or not.if no more rains then the routes should be good to go,though the govt has advised no travel to the region for one week.

Kochi munnar is blocked due to land slide at cheeyapara. It should be open by independence day weekend.

Thanks for the useful update.
