Many members here have posted about the TN police asking folks to remove the number plates and proceed, but I'm wondering how this is safe (it is also a violation of the law but let's just leave it aside due to the sensitivity of issue and possibility of situation escalating). Reason I have a doubt in my mind is that it's a dead giveaway if a vehicle doesn't have the plate that is is a KA registered vehicle in TN or vice-versa.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Hi people!

In the wake of the latest events and also information about more kaveri issues on the cards I decided it may not be safe to travel even on 26th OCT. I have cancelled my booking at shantiteeram :(

I hope I have taken the right call!

Hopefully I will get to visit alleppey soon when the times are better. Thanks for all your suggestions on the route and places to visit and things to do

You could have travelled via Mysore - Kalpetta - Batheri route. That one avoids Tamil Nadu completely and without any issues. Also the route is move vivid and picturesque.

There was a stretch where Police escort was not provided for some reason and it was before this stretch we were advised to remove the number plates. Police suggestion was to drive at 3 digit speed and stick to the speed lane. Police said it will be tough for people to identify a KA vehicle at night without number plate while driven at high-speed (agreed it is debatable)

26th October is nearly a month away. Lots of things can change (for the better) by then. Also there are alternate routes which can byepass TN state completely.

I returned (via TN) from Kerala yesterday during the day hours. At that time the police asked us to remove the registration plates, but did not insist on us joining any convoy. Saw many "nameless" cars going alone. Saw two three convoys as well. But the problem was convoys were extremely slow because it also had KA trucks being escorted.

Sad to hear this, but I feel this may have been a bit premature. There is a good chance that things will be normal in about a month as both the states cannot afford to remain at logger heads.

Even if you couldn't have used a car, allepy is quite well accessible by Rail and the timings are also quite decent. You could have tried this option.

Anyways, don't loose too much sleep over your decision. There are umpteen other places and there will always be another time!

I feel you should not have cancelled the trip as 26th October is a long way to go. These protests cannot continue for ever as it is going to affect the economies of both the states.
How long do you expect people to get down at KA/TN border, walk for some distance before reaching the destination in TN/KA. Things should settle down in a weeks time.
I would suggest you to reconsider your travel plans.

Hi Sree73! Thanks for the reply. I would havr taken the same route; but mysore and the surrounding area will be tense too. Doesnt matter if the car carries a KA regn no. However, I thought I will still touch TN before I get into Kerala!

Thanks sachin, haria and suresh

I did mull over the whole thing for some time. But today again there is a verdict by the tribunal that water has to be released to TN, also, if there is rain in october the amount of water flow will be increased. That is again enough to fuel more unrest. The decisions that are coming from the law and tribunal are keeping october rains in consideration. Somehow I have a bad feeling about all this. Lets see if things do improve, I will still make that trip😊

I noticed from your first post on that day that you had a small kid in the list of passengers. Quite naturally, you have to be helped. Have to admit that I had to overcome that little uneasy feeling of checking with a person whom I never met, if he is interested in driving back together. That is part of team-bhp way of meeting people anyway

My brother was supposed to start from Changanacherry at 5:30 am and pick me up on the way from in-law's place. Because of last minute pressure from parents and relatives owing to previous day's TN bandh, he decided to stay overnight with me at Vaikom so that we could start early next day from there. In case if Salem route did not work, the plan was to fallback to Palakkad - Kozhikode - Bandipur route and so starting early became a prerequisite.

Sorry that we could not drive tandem as initially imagined. Some friends of mine drove via Sulthan Batttery on that day. Though they made it, it is a slow and tiring route to drive.

Anyway, everything worked out well in the end on that tentative day. That is satisfying

Re: All Roads to Kerala

For those who are interested there is another route too. Bangalore - Kunigal - Channarayapatna - Hunsur - Gonikoppal - Mananthavadi - Wayanad - To anywhere in Kerala.

This route doesn't touch Tamilnadu, plus it avoids the sensitive areas around Cauvery.

Hi Pramod, after a little convincing about my home being in Bangalore, he agreed to send me through after removing the number plate. Since most cars without number plate coming in were KA registered vehicles they were letting them through and I made it across the border and made a mad dash to HSR layout .

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Has anyone done Mysore - Wayanad - Guruvayur - Cochin - Trivandrum recently? If so, how is the route condition and how much time does it take? Google Map says 14 hours. I may take this route to avoid TN route due to the current issues.

Cochin - Trivandrum which is just 200 kms via NH47 during day time will take almost 6-7 hours. Not sure of road condition as I did it early last year.
