Used to go on that route, but the horrible roads between Kannur and Kozhikode are a dealbreaker on that route. It takes almost an hour to clear Thalassery, Mahe towns and another block on the narrow moorad bridge.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Nh17 is in pretty bad shape especially around Chavakkad. Chamravattom-Calicut road is also in very poor condition. Would advise on the longer route via Trichur-Calicut

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Mannuthy - Vadakkencherry section will be repaired in 2 weeks. See the news article below.

Also, I read in Mathrubhumi on Saturday that there was a 12 hour long traffic jam in Kuthiran from Friday night.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Guys, I am planning to travel from Coimbatore to Alleppey during the end of this month. Is it advisable to take the NH or should I look for any alternate route? I would like to take my BMW X3 for this trip and am looking for relatively smoother roads to enjoy the drive.

As per reports, the NH should be repaired by month end. If that is the case, take the NH. Watch this thread for updates.

Too many trucks. Since Onam weekend was coming, guess there were huge inflow of trucks to deliver the goods on time. 4 wheeler traffic was less towards TN. Cops were there to manage the traffic but it was still bad.

Hope they will repair this soon.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Dear Team Bhp ians

Am planning a trip on 16 Sept to sabarimala. I see that the darshan opens on 16th only. What time will darshan be open to public on that day? I heard someone say that the darshan will be open from 4 pm to 9 pm only. Is that true? Any advice will be welcome. Planning to start tomm night at around 10 pm.

with regards

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Dear Friends

Opening time of Sabarimala temple. Visited Sabarimala on Saturday with friends. As given in various websites, they open the gate for non-irumudi team at 5 pm or as given in the timing on the opening day of the monthly puja. This time, the usual entry place was blocked and there was a board directing people to the wrong location (the one used for abhishekam). Thankfully due to a helpful policeman we ended up in the correct location (below the steps) at 2.00 pm itself. Happy darshan at 5.15 pm.

Returned in the night heavy rain. If you consider a road trip during heavy rains in this route, think about it and change your mind. Water level upto the bonnet and visibility limited to 3 metres. Due to the blessings we reached back safely.

Have a recommendation - If you ever consider yourself needing a safe and wonderful place on the way consider two restaurants (Hillview and Red Chillies) an hour from Sabarimala and 2 hrs from Kumily. Really clean, great view and specially made food (separate cook) for iyyappa devotees (though this is a veg and non veg restaurant).

with regards

shriram

Re: All Roads to Kerala

One more hotel on the kumily road my mates suggested in Hotel Bushland in Peermade. Also another restaurant that cooks separate food during ayyappa season. Good clean facilities.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Completed yet another trip from Trichur to Kukke Subramanya. Route followed was:

Trichur-pattambi-manjeri-thamarassery-kalpetta bypass-panamaram-kottikulam-tholpetty-kutta-gonikoppa-virajpet-madikeri-sulya-Subrahmanya

Thamarassery ghat is full of potholes (craters ) mostly at hairpin turns and hence chances of major block is high. The roads after Kutta is good.

Not sure about the Pala-Kanjirappally stretch. I travelled on the Kanjirappally-Kumily stretch just before the recent bout of rains, and the road conditions were quite decent. There is the odd pothole here and there, but not difficult to avoid since you wouldn't really be driving too fast on the winding roads. Kottayam-Kumily took me around 2.5 hours either way (about 105 kms)
