Re: All Roads to Kerala

Situation in Kerala changed overnight with Mullaperiyar dam shutters released. Idukki and Cochin is flooded in various areas. And landslides continue in Wayanad, Malappuram areas.

Main routes declared as submerged in Cochin as of now are
1) Aluva - Perumbavur
2) Aluva - Paravoor
3) Angamaly - Paravoor
4) Angamaly - Malayattoor

Cochin International Airport is closed temporarily since today morning and all flights are redirected to Trivandrum, Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore airports.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

NH-47 from Aluva to Cochin is safe as of now but almost all inner roads from the highway are flooded especially in and around Aluva. Could see fire and rescue boats on the highway. Many were evacuated in Aluva. Luckily, I managed to escape from a flat in Aluva where the water was almost till the bonnet.

Here's where we were stuck.

Our lunch by the river. The basement of the hotel was flooded.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Is there any roads that one can take to reach Pala from Ernakulam?

Periyar Hotel right? The entrance and car park is at lower level than the adjoining roads. Surprised that you dared to park the car there

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Intermediate update :

Palakkad - Calicut . 15 Aug, start at 06.00 PM. Reached Calicut at midnight, 6 hours for 130 odd kms.

Got stuck near between Perinthalmanna and Malapurram since road is submerged. Went back to Manjeri. There too roads submerged at many places, got re routed by locals drove through water in some places and got on to highway near Chelari.

It's still raining in Calicut. Hence things may become worse by 16th.

Heard from locals that Pattambi is also water logged. So best option anyone has for North KL from Coimbatore side is though treacherous Kuthiran and Thrissur.

The road is a lot higher than other side roads (by now it would be flooded. Moreover situation was relatively fine when we went there and my cousin was already there before I reached. Only after lunch situation got bad with heavy rains.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

i had drove from bangalore to angamaly on 10th Aug. It was evident that not many wanted to visit kerala during this season hence traffic was less. Took the salem, Coimbatore, Palakkad. then detour at Alathur, via chelekkara and reached trichur . from there went onto the highway and proceeded to Angamaly. Rains were moderate.

However this changed from 14Aug evening when it started pouring heavily. we were anyway scheduled to drive back on 15th morning. so we stuck to our scheduled plan and drove in the heavy rains. At kuthiran, we noticed heavy traffic and it took little over 1 hour to pass through kuthiran. Way too many potholes which by now would have got even worse.

Read in news paper that Kuthiran is closed for traffic. Google maps also shows the same.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

How is the situation on the Kottayam-Kumali road?
Ranny town is submerged and is closed to traffic.
I have a drive planned from Trivandrum to Thekkady on August 25th. The usual route is Trivandrum-Adoor-Pathanamthitta-Erumely-Mundakayam-Thekkady. Let us see if this will be possible by end of next week.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

From what I understand, Kuthiran is a No Go Area, due landslides. (I am attaching some photographs received on WhatsApp). Even the road via Chelakkara is blocked due uprooted trees etc. So if travelling, be careful.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

My sister is driving to Blore now. They are taking the Alathur route as recommended by BHPian Mallumowgli. Aluva and Companypadi is under water and they somehow managed to pass it. Traffic at Koratty is at standstill. Kuthiran is closed.

Will update the thread when I hear from them.

Suhas, did you take the route via Cherpulassery to Perinthalmanna? If yes, how is the condition between Mundur and Cherpulassery?

How about taking Palakkad-Cherpulassery-Koppam-Valanchery-Kozhikode or
Palakkad-Ottapalam-Koppam-Valanchery-Kozhikode?

I think the second route passes through Pattambi and there could be water logging there.

Mostly will have to travel from Palakkad to Calicut Saturday morning.

Re: All Roads to Kerala

Latest update:

NH-47 is closed and not letting vehicles from Thrissur towards Palghat. Also, they had tried the Alathur route but cops have blocked the roads in and around Thrissur town.

Looks like they will have to halt at Thrissur or wait for few hours to continue with their drive (rains have reduced there).
