It is intermittent rain. But once it starts then it rains crabs & fish.

Disclaimer - If you don't find it raining crabs & fish then it is probably my beer talking.

Hi guys,

First of all sorry for the repeated question. After reading the whole thread, I am bit confused. I will be doing Bangalore - Udupi - Murudeshwara (if possible) - Bangalore starting 29.Sept.2007.

Day 1 : Bangalore - Hassan - Belur - Mudigere - Kudremukha - Karkala - Udupi.
Day 2 : Udupi - Kollur - Murudeshwara
Day 3 : Murudeshwara - Honnavara - Shimoga - Tumkur - Bangalore.

Can someone please correct me for mistakes? I will be going to Murudeshwara if possible (saw the thread on NH-17, hence "if possible")

Thanks,
Deepak

Thanks to everyone who had given suggestions earlier.

I went on the trip to Sringeri-Hornadu-Udupi over the last weekend (Sept 29th to Oct 2nd). It was a great trip and some people may like to do it during the Dusheera holidays. Here are my observations about this route:

Day 1: Went to Shimoga. The road gets bad around 40Kms before Shimoga. Till then the road is good. Saw some patch work going on when I returned. Maybe they will fix the problem soon.
Shimoga to Koppa - Road is pretty good except for some patches.
Koppa to Sringeri - Road in very good condition

Day 2: Sringeri - Kudremukh - Hornadu - Karkala - Udupi

The road from Sringeri to Hornadu is in excellent shape, especially inside the Kudremukh National park.

Day 3: Udupi - Kateel - Udupi

The road to Kateel is OK except for a few patches on NH 17 which are downright horrible. I heard that the NH to Hassan from Mangalore was in similar shape.

Day 4: A driver there told me to avoid the Hassan route and the Sulya - Madikere route. So I followed the route Udupi-Agumbe-Someshwar-Teerthahalli-Shimoga This route is very good except for a few kms between Teerthahalli and Shimoga. A very scenic route as well.

So if you are planning to go during Dushera to these places check out about the Hassan Mangalore route and if it is still in bad shape, use the Shimoga route.

(I dropped Kollur from my plans and instead went to Kateel since the road is supposed to be bad.)

Good to know you enjoyed your trip!

Did you go to Shimoga as a destination in itself? Otherwise, you'd have taken a rather long route, right?

I'm planning a weekend visit to Kateel in the next 2 weeks. Any suggestions you may have for me regarding the route or attractions in particular? What was the distance you clocked in the entire trip?

Hi skandyhere,

I didn't go to Shimoga as a destination. It was a roundabout route and I did have to cover more distance but I was told it was worthwhile since the Sakleshpur route and Sulya route are not motorable. (Infact one person at Udupi told me that if I took those routes I will end up by giving the vehicle and myself for service !!)

The Someshwar route is very scenic and if you go via Agumbe you may want to check out the sunset there. It is better to be based at Udupi to go to Kateel. Kateel as such is lovely with the river flowing beneath the temple. Malpe is a nice beach where you can enjoy yourself. You can check out the Kapu beach as well. It is on the way to Kateel from Udupi. The beaches are not too crowded. (Don't know how they will be during the Dusheera time)

I clocked around 1120 kms (Home to Home) for my whole trip.

I am considering the following route. I hope it isn't a bad idea.

BLR-HASSAN-BELUR-MUDIGERE-KUDREMUKHA-KARKALA-UDUPI-KATEEL

KATEEL-MANGALORE-CHARMADI-CHIKMAGALUR-HASSAN-BLR

There is NO FIXED DESTINATION over the weekend. The whole point is to make the weekend memorable. As you suggest, we intend to stay at Udupi, visit beaches, move to Kateel, and return.

Do you suggest amendments?

SOunds good!

Yea the route is fine only that you will find some bad patches i think it should be managable!

btw which car you drive?

Lots of hotels in Udupi, there is a good one on the Malpe Beach but little on the expensive side. also you can try "Turtle bay" this is on Maravanthe beach.

Read in todays Kannada daily that "Shiradi" ghats will be closed for few months as the repair works will be done. so the traffic will be directed towards bilse and charmadi. since these roads are narrow and not in a great shape. can expect some traffic jams.

Driving the Verna CRDi. I hope it won't make much difference after the Shirdi Ghats are closed - the roads are so bad that I hear no traffic plies there anyway.

You have a better idea? It can even include a better destination. Totally open. The only thing finalised is the long drive on a weekend two weeks later.
