Not left without any options. There is one last, but a rather good option.

Have been back from Maravanthe/Udupi trip we made a few weeks ago. From M'lore to B'lore there is only one route that has good to very good roads all the way - with zero bad patches anywhere.

It's a round-about route but at least it's enjoyable.

M'lore-Karkala-Kudremukh-Sringeri (without reaching Kalasa)-Balehonnur-Aldur-Chikmagalur-Hassan-Bangalore.

We travelled from Udupi to Karkala, so I am ignorant of the road condition from Mangalore to Karkala via Moodabidri. This route is probably the same as what was mentioned by Balechaparka, with a minor difference here or there.

A few day back I had traveled to Mangalore via:

B'lore - Hassan - Belur - Moodgere - Kottigehara - Belthangadi - BC Road - M'lore.

The stretch between Moodgere and Kottigehara is pathetic. There is no road and it takes about an hour to cover this small distance (20km I guess). However, Charmadi roads are fine though you may come across traffic jams occasionally due to narrow roads. It took me 8hrs to reach M'lore (4:30 am - 12.30pm, total distance covered 395km, house to house).

On my way back I chose to travel via this route:
M'lore - Puttur - Madikeri - Shrirangapattana - B'lore.

The roads were dismal to say the least. Starting from M'lore, the next 180 kms is simply too bad. I had to maintain an average speed of only 30kmph to cover this distance. Needless to say, it took me around 6 hrs to cover this stretch. The rest of the journey was covered in another 4.5 hours. Thats a whooping 10.5 hrs in total! (house to house, 415km, 3:00pm - 1:30am) Only saving grace was the Mysore - B'lore State Higway. Kindly avoid this road at any cost. I felt miserable for this decision.

Now matter how bad the Shiradi road is, you'll still make it faster than the Madikeri road!. I'd would suggest the Charmadi route.

I know I've been repeating it now, but I'm ecstatic that at least there is one route with properly proper roads throughout the journey from B'lore to M'lore.

Sringeri-Kudremukha-Karkala-M'lore!

Last saturday I took the BLR-Hassan-Modigere-Aldur-Balehonnur-Sringeri-Kudremukh Ghat-Karkala-Moodbidri to reach MLR. The only bad strecth i noticed was b/w Modigere to Aldur but this 10Km stretch is managable. The rest of the roads are good. The Kudremukh Ghat is a single road.
This route is quite long compared to Charmadi route. Moodigere to Karkala is full of curves with some coffe estate views.

I am starting my return journey within an hour. Was thinking of Madikeri route but taking into acount Sushants experience I will proceed with the Kudremukh Ghat or Charmadi Ghat.

I'm told that the route through Belur and Kudremukh has the best roads to reach Mangalore.
Its the longest route to reach Mangalore, 100kms more i think.

Kudremukh ghat single lane!

How about the traffic on this road, too many vehicles would be a pain?

Mangalore Bangalore (Shiradi or Madikeri ? ) 01 Dec 07 Update

I've just now reached Bangalore via., the Mangalore-Shiradi-Hassan-Nelamangala-Bangalore route.

The Shiradi Ghat although in dismal state is motorable, atleast you won't bottom out on most cars (above 170 mm clearance).
Only LMVs are allowed, the road is closed for buses and trucks.
Concrete road laying is going on three curved stretches, they havent started asphalting the rest of Shiradi yet.

I was apprehensive about taking the Shiradi ghat route after hearing all the horror stories, and did not have any first hand information regarding this stretch.
But after experiencing the horrible Madikeri Mangalore stretch on the way to Mangalore earlier (the entire 180 KM is a horrible with potholes throughout), I decided its better to go through 27 KM of hell (takes more than an hour) at Shiradi rather than 150+ KM Madikeri route , the shiradi stretch is just 27 KM of bad road and after Sakleshpur, its a real blissful drive via Hassan and you can reach quickly.

Hope this helps.
Cheers
