Raj ask your cousin to take the Karkala route without thinking, according to me he might have to do 60-100 max of extra kms but this road is good...

Lohith is right. Although I'm not sure about how much more distance that would be compared to the more conventional routes, but take it from me that it's more than worth it. Surely no one would want to 'off-road' all the way from Mangalore to Mysore.

There are no other options available. It's either through Kudremukha-Sringeri, or the more direct Shiradi Ghat route.

Thanks guys

I got a even more clear picture after talking to a cab driver yesterday

Here is what he says

1. NH48: road is bad only in shiradi stretch of about 20 kms... he had travelled on this route couple of days back and says it is manageable if you have a vehicle with high ground clearance(i guess he means the likes of Innovas and scorpios..)

2. Mysore madikeri route: Should avoid this route at any cost

3. So the third option is via karkala sringeri... he said this road, though bit long, is in good condition

So i asked my BIL to take this route 3.

Just thought of updating guys who are probably planning to travel to mangalore

Raj, if you want to go via Sringeri, why do you want to touch Kudremukh ?

You could try MLR - Karkala - Kudremukh - Mudigere - Belur - Hassan - BLR ?
Distance on this route is 420 km. I am not aware of the road conditions inside, though Belur - BLR is good.

Raj even NH48 is bad for cars! did this route couple of weeks back and i suffered till i reached Sakleshpura, from Mangalore till you reach Shiradi you will have to go through some bad stretches regularly. as the driver pointed out hi ground clearnce wont suffer much here!

With reference to ground clearance
I saw 800s, Omni's, Old Premier's, Palio, accent, bolero's, scorpios, one innova, ambassadors plying though the Shiradi, if you are slow and careful enough, it won't scrape the bottom.

Which would be best route to reach Udupi from Bangalore? Is it possible to totally avoid Mangalore?

Madikeri would be further south, so doesn't sound intuitive.

Now sitting in Kasaragod after a bone breaking overnighter thru Madikeri. The roads are very bad after Kushalnagar. It's turned more worst than what it was about 3weeks earlier. After Madikeri it gets more bad. Some patches are now left with rocks and brown earth.
Opt this route only if unavoidable and you're ready to drive at at a snail's pace.

for_cars did come by Shiradi couple of weeks back, did manage to scarpe once. can say my ohc did pretty well!

btw Bolero's & scorpio's dont come to low ground clearnce, they are good in terms of ground clearnce compared to any sedan or small cars... infact these vehilces are meant for these kinda of terrains esp Bolero!

Back on one of the favorite (infamous) routes talked about. :(

I intend to drive down Blore-Mlore tomorrow.

Any pointers to the following questions much appreciated based on
recent travel in any of these routes.

1.Shiradi Ghat (Hassan > Saklespur > Mlore)
Given that its been raining in Blore for the past 2 days, I assume it would
be raining in Shiradi Ghat also, so am afraid a Santro might not make it
thru the mud and slush.

Can someone confirm this, in case they travelled recently ?

2.Blr > Hassan > Belur > Jannapura > Mudigere-Kottighera > Charmadi > Belthangady > Guruvayankere > B.C.Road > Mangalore.
How much longer is this route compared to Hassan > Sakespur > Mlore ?
And how are the Roads ?

3.I heard that Mysore > Madikeri > Mlore is horrible now.
Especially Kushalnagar > Mlore.

Hi,

Route Query: I'am planning to go to Udupi starting from 25/12. Pls suggest the route as I understand the route from Bangalore to Mangalore is bad with pot holes/ craters. Which other route is feasible. I will be travelling in Ikon with 4 members (2 adults and 2 kids). It will be 3 day trip. Planning to start at around 8.00 am in morning. OR is it better to go by bus to Udupi and take a vehicle from Udupi and move around the places.

Places Query: Also suggest which are the places I can watch out in and around Udupi. I have seen Malpe/ Murudeshwara/ Kollur/ Hornadu/ Dharmastala/ Sringeri/ Sirsi/ Gokarna etc and almost all the pilgrimage places. I have also gone to St. Mary's Island.

Weather Query: How is the weather in and around Udupi. Is it hot/cold/manageable? Pls inform as I will be travelling with my family with 2 kids. (1~5 yrs of age). Do I need to bring in lot of warm clothes?

Pls suggest if any other places are worth seeing in and around Udupi.

Thanks

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drove down from Bangalore to Mangalore 2 days back.
Took the following route
Bangalore > Hassan > Belur > Mudigere > Charmadi > Belthangady > B.C.Road > Mangalore.

Took some pics on the way
Pic of my Santro

Bangalore > Hassan - Excellent road.

Hassan > Belur

The Belur Road as such though only one lane per side is in excellent condition.

Pic of the Belur Highway , Dist approx 38 km. Can be covered in 40 min.
The entire road is in this condition.

We stopped over at the Belur Chennakesava Temple.
The carvings are truly amazing.

The temple is on the highway itself, so no need to deviate.

Some pics of the temple

Belur to Mudigere
The initial part of the road is quite good, Excellent scenery on both sides.
Road is fairly good

Later the road deteriorates a bit, but still drivable.
You pass through a lot of coffee plantations.

Later there is a horrible patch of road which is reduced to rubble.
You need to drive for 15 - 20 km on this road

Once the Charmadi Ghat stars the road is fairly good, But you can expect
many turns which have huge craters. However overall the road condition is much
better than the Madikeri - Puttur stretch.
The entire ghat road is of this condition

Once you cross the Charmadi Ghat, the road is very good till BC Road
Though a bit winding.
