I need to make a trip to Mlore.
I believe as of date the best route is once again the good old Blr > Hassan > Shiradi > Mlore.

Can someone who has traveled recently confirm this? (mostly Shiradi Ghat + Road after that till Mlore)

Shiradi is the way to go!

I've travelled last week through Shiradi and its improved
a lot now, only a few rough patches (totalling 10 Km) after
Sakleshpur on the way to M'lore, that too manageable by any car,
other than that its smooth all the way.
Only grouse is the Peenya-Dasarahalli jam on Tumkur road
Suggest you start early from B'lore at 5 AM
Cheers

Last I passed through Shiradi was in August and the less said the better.

Has it been re-surfaced? I was planning on taking the Coorg route to Sullia but would love to go via Hassan if the Shiradi nightmare has been sorted.

Can anyone else confirm?

rjstyle, via hassana - shiradi is the best route, from nelamagala to mangalore should take about 6hrs, from mangalore till Kundapura roads are done so should take about 2hrs considering the traffic etc

While coming you can come via karkala till ujre, will take little longer coz of winding roads but will be fun to drive

Suggest you not to take via Mangalore, Udupi.

Take the shiradi ghat. After ghat take right turn for Dharmashthala (Read my travelogue of Saligrama, take that route which was excellent, I mean return journey route). You will reach Beltangandi
Beltangandi - Karkala - Manipal (From Manipal University there is an excellent road which will Bypass Udupi and take you to NH17 near Saligrama). Samurai can help you with that route bypassing Udupi.
Saligrama to Kundapur is another 16km. Hope you are staying at Turtle bay resort.

abhi and lohith thanks for the route info. I actually know the routes pretty well , but the condition of the roads was a factor for worry.

abhi I am heading to Kundapur for a wedding and hence will be staying in my friends house.

Turtle bay is planned for may when I drive down with wifey. Right now this is an old school boys meet at the wedding. Time for some endless merry .

Just today somebody from Bangalore visited me after driving through Shiradi ghats. He was not happy, he said there were at least 25 bad patches, he feels he lost atleast 1-2 hours due to it.

You can continue till Uppinangadi and take a left turn to Puttur.

Or you can come till Mani and take the left which will take you to Puttur.

But if you want to go to Sulliya, I think there's an alternate route without going to Puttur. I'm not sure.
