Is it a good idea to do Bangalore Belgaum Goa route. Bangalore Belgaum is around 510kms of 4 lane road.

If coming from Banglore then instead of Belgaum take the Hubli-Ankoka option.
Belgaum option (route via Amboli) works well if one is coming from Pune.

Google maps shows a different route for belgaum to Goa and not via amboli

belgaum-bahadarwadi-kalmani-kakumbi-chorla-Sanquelim-ribandar-panjim

The idea behind choosing belgaum was the 4 laned NH4 all the way. Its just the 120kms from belgaum which is bad i assume.

Chorla is really not worth taking.

Thanks for the update, i guess its always been cratered as the same comment i heard way back in 2009 when i did the goa route for the first time :D

Is there any shorter and ok route to go to north goa from NH4, coz its a real pain to travel the entire length of goa if you enter from Karwar.

The only other option is to take this route:

Hubli-Belgaum-Amboli-Sawantwadi-Mapusa via nh17.

Ranjit,

If @motomaverick is coming from Bangalore, why Amboli? Wont the regular Hubli-Ankola-Yellapur be a better option?
A friend of mine stays very much on the 4A side. He said the road has gone bad.
(But he still has to take it anyway as he stays close to Ponda!)

He says he does not want to drive through Karwar to north goa, hence the amboli option.

If he is headed to north goa, Amboli is still a better option as you avoid Karwar-Panjim road which is narrow and full of bus/truck traffic.

I dont mind going from Karwar and Panaji road its just that since it gets quite narrow at few sections and due to regular city & bus traffic it takes quite a bit of time. But no worries i can still take this route, i would have to cover the Bangalore Hubli section as fast as possible.

Hi Guys, I will be driving to Goa this week, destination is Baga Beach. I will stay at shimoga a day and proceed to Goa. From shimoga which is the best route? Shimoga-Honnavar-Karwar-Baga Or Shimoga-Hubli-Amboli-Baga ? I am seeing almost 80 kms more in Amboli route.

Google maps shows to take Kumta-Siddapur route, how is this road condition, if any travelled recently?

Shimoga - Honnawar - Karwar road is Ok. But not the best. I have done it in Feb 2011. Should not be a problem in any vehicle.

I do not think it makes sense to do the Shimoga Hubli - Amboli route. Its a bit too long in my opinion. Especially because the NH4 stretch is not very long to consider any time benefits.

The honnawar route is quite scenic too.

Shimoga honnavar karwar baga should be your preferred route.
