Anyone has tried out the Ramnagar-Anmod route recently? Any update on the progress of road widening?

I took Chorla last weekend and is nothing great. Inquired with locals about Anmod, road is under construction, motorable though. As per google Anmod is the fastest route.

If you are visiting North Goa please avoid route via Karwar, Canacona to Panjim road is under construction and regular traffic will eat a lot of time. I took 2:30 min from Panjim to Canacona.

I drove to hometown(Puttur) via NH17(or the Goa-Mangalore) highway, it was a pleasure. There are diversions until Honnavara, but won't bother you much. May be because it was a weekday, the traffic was sparse. Canacona-Home took me 6:30min flat with about 1hr break. This used to be my fav stretch back then, and its all set to regain its lost glory.

I am traveling to Palolem in the 2nd weekend of February, which route would be the best. Would be starting from Bellandur area in Bangalore and it would be a night drive.

Do we know the definition of motorable here? Did anybody check if it is OK to travel with family on this road? Any updates from recent travellers?

We traveled via Palolem-Anmod-Belgaum-Mumbai on Dec 31. The road is excellent, only thing you have to be careful of, on the concretized part of the road, is that the edges are not shouldered, it's like driving on a platform - better avoided during the night, but no issues during daytime with care.

Else, it's a supreme road, no worries at all. There's a fair few breakfast/food joints there now than used to be 3 years back.

Great. Then it would be good to know the road condition between Dharwad to Anmod which goes via Mugad, Ramnagar. I am visiting south Goa in first week of Feb but via Dharwad.

Some work has cropped up for me and need to visit North (extreme north) Goa in first week of Feb. Does anybody know the Amboli ghat condition? I am planning to take either Belgaum Amboli or Belgaum Chorla route. Any help is appreciated.

I have not taken Chorla route recently. Any help in telling me the best option to take Chorla route from Bangalore is appreciated.

Except for the initial 10 kms of pothole ridden road in Karnataka limits, Belgaum-- Amboli is in a very good condition. The 50kms stretch in Maharashtra is very smooth. Amboli ghat is in a pristine condition.

Belgaum--Chorla ghat--Goa too is in a very condition. All the potholes in Karnataka and Goa limits have been filled up. While Karnataka has done the job really neat, the ghat section in Goa limits is bumpy and patchy but absolutely nothing to worry about.

I took Chorla after deviating from Kittur. Road was good, not butter smooth . There are rough patches here and there including 100 Mtr mud road. I had better experience driving from Goa-Mangalore-Bangalore, though quite long one. That said for North Goa, Chorla is decent.

Which stretch between Canacona and Panjim is the culprit? I'm asking this to evaluate if we can still use this route to reach all those South Goan resorts.

Almost entire stretch. Local traffic just adds to the problem. I took cool 2-3 hrs from Panjim during morning time.

The 4 of us (family) visited Goa last week. We left on the 15th at 5 am in our Octavia 1.8 TSI.

The route we took was Tumkur - Chitradurga - Davanagere - Hubli - Ramnagar - Mugad - Anmond - Goa.

Up till Chitradurga the roads are excellent. After Chitradurga we had to negotiate several diversions and the service roads are in terrible shape riddled with potholes and unscientific / unmarked speed breakers.

We crossed the Hubli bypass and took a left into the slip road through a local toll. The road takes you through a railway level crossing which is in bad shape. The ghats after that are very good, but there is a point where concrete surfacing begins and although it is good, the shoulders are non existent and cut off sharply at the edges. Best to avoid going close to the edge while negotiating this stretch.

However, about 10-20 km into this stretch you will come across major road works where the roads are often non existent. The concrete surfacing abruptly ends and you will have to negotiate a muddy and dusty path with stones. While getting off the concreting and onto the mud/stone path, our Octavia took a few hits underneath. It is motorable but best avoided. The stretch remains under construction all the way till the Goa border. Sedans / hatchbacks are not recommended. Night time driving also is not recommended under any circumstances.

The roads in Goa are fine. Nothing to complain about, except for minor rough areas in the ghats.

On the way back, we decided to try out the Cancona - Ponda - Karwar - Ankola - Yellapur - Hubli - Chitradurga - Tumkur route.

The roads through Cancona and up till Karwar are fantastic. Various by-passes have been built and what used to be a 1.5 hour drive from Benaulim, through the small towns in South Goa till the border has been reduced to just under 1 hour. There are a few diversions but nothing to worry about.

The roads through Karwar are also good, however there is tunneling work in progress resulting in diversions up till Ankola.

The left towards Yellapur and all the way up till Yellapur town is not bad. Potholes have been patched up but the surface is still average. The curves around the ghats need urgent attention and are in bad shape.

After Yellapur, the roads are absolutely fantastic and remain so all the way up till about 20 km before the Hubli bypass. About 20 km before the Hubli bypass, culverts are being installed and major road works are in progress, with only one lane being operational at a time. Watch out for reckless busses and trucks.

From Hubli till Chitradurga, the roads are deplorable, thanks to the 4-6 laning and widening work in progress. There are at least 15-20 diversions and the service roads are borderline unmotorable with unscientific speed breakers and non existent tarmac.

After Chitradurga, it's more or less smooth sailing all the way till Nelamangala.

Our onward journey took us around 15 hours with two big stops. 5:30 am to 8 pm.

Our journey back to Bangalore, we again left at 5:30 am and reached Bangalore (Richmond Town) by 7:30 pm.

Personally, I would avoid travel by road to Goa this year as it is quite stressful due to the constant diversions and road works on most routes.

It's doable in an SUV but if in a sedan, I'd say catch a flight instead.

Probably, in the current situation the route via Karwar - Honnavar - Shimoga - Hiriyur is best though it takes a bit more time. The road condition throughout is quite fine.

However, this works best if the destination is South Goa, else we have to factor in 1 to 2 hours more in goa traffic.

I would suggest folks to explore Bangalore-Mangalore-Goa route(may not be worth it for Nothern part). The are no potholes anywhere and I would not be surprised if you reach early than Anmod/Chrola/Yellapura. Road is scenic too and you will love more if you have a hot hatch. It would be about 50-100Km longer depending on your destination in Goa.

Are these concrete roads wide enough for cool driving or with same dimensions as before with tar replaced with concrete? I remember an incident in Anmod ghat a few years ago on KA side when a car next to me almost went in a huge truck descending from other side. The ghat road was very narrow on KA side and broken badly on almost all turns. Negotiating with that along with huge vehicles from other side was nightmare. But atleast there were shoulders here and there to help. If those concrete patches are wide, one need not have to worry about the edges having no shoulders.
