Haveri - Sirsi -Mirjan - Gokarna - Ankola is a nice road and presently the best one to travel to goa...
Hubli to Ankola road (NH63) was an excellent and preferred road 2 years back but it is in bad shape these days...I read some stuffs on newspaper that work will start to reshape NH63 to its past glory but dont know whether there is any work around...
Probably someone can ask the truckers who stop in NH17-NH63 junction or IOC Kamat to know its present state...
Abhi
Hey Abhi... as I told you at the meet I'm planning to go to Gokarna this weekend. Is the Tumkur-Shimoga-Sagar-Honavar the best route to take? Most of it is on NH206 which seemingly according to a friend of mine is in OK state other than a 10km stretch around shimoga. I need to do 40km on NH17. How bad is that Honavar-Gokarna stretch?

ROC, it is about 40km around Shimoga which is pathetic and also Honnavar - Gokarna is a pain too.
If you plan via Shimoga then try JogFalls - Siddapur - Sirsi route as suggested by Ravibhat. THen the Sirsi - Mirjan - Gokarna route. But that will take time. Kaushik drove the same route few days back...
Still, I suggest you to take the NH4 and then haveri - Sirsi route...It would be faster for Gokarna...Start early at 4AM, you should be in Gokarna at 10-11AM...Read my Goa travelogue for details (road conditions are pretty much the same as that trip)
Abhi
Abhi, there is a pretty bad section of around 6-7 kms on Mirjan-Ankola stretch. But after that the road is good except for a few bad sections.
And BTW, I found the petrol on Gokarna BP highway to be quite good.I've used Speed.
thats good update about roads,
blre -> tumkur -> shimoga -> jog falls -> siddapur -> sirsi is very scenic route I take that route 9 out of 10 times when i visit sirsi/ankola.
We never get tired in that route.
Few stretches are scary i do agree :) no traffic at all especially in the night, morning, afternoon.
It would bit take extra time comapred to chitradurga/haveri route but beause its 35km extra long and no 4 lanes.
hotel shivani is luxury hotel and if you need pure veg without drinks choose panchavati / maduvana in sirsi.
Gokarna cross BP Petrol bunk is very good, he is cheap as well by 20 paisa i guess, recently he has BP speed stock as well.
Good that you enjoyed.
Regards,
Ravi.
Folks took off to Goa last thursday, Nov1. via Tumkur Shimoga route.
fro tarikeri to Shimoga road is in bad shape. people with low ground clearnece wont like it at all.Shimoga to Jog via Sagara os nice though you will have few potholes here and threr so watch out for it. sagara to Jog is nice, Jog to Sidapura is not in a great shape leaving couple of kms in the begining. sidapura to sirsi it AMAZING!, irsi to Mirjan is nice. Devmane ghat is slightly beaten up.mirjan to Karwar on NH17 is atest:) your driving skilss would be tested. buses and trucks wont wait for you they just want way and the massive potholes fail to slow them down
Whilke coming back i took NH17 to Mangalore, yes you read it right. also had to cover kmore then half of the distance post sunset + it was raining:) it was one strainful drive for me. getting away without scarpping the undrbody of the car was not easy.
Bad stetches: some between Gokarna and Honnavara (but managable), Bhatkal, Byndoor and Kundapura has some really bad once. and some are really long bad stretches.
Santhekate(Udupi) to Mangalore is managable, now am in Mangalore. will bebback this sunday.
After this stressful journey i really love my car more(OHC), Honda rocks!
Suspensions behaved really well (Thanks Fazal, FRK Racing) and a good service prior to this journey by Sanjay.
When on those bad roads(both Shimoga Hiway, NH17) was thinking how could we punish those who are responsible for the present shape of these roads.
BTW HAppy Diwali guys!
Hi Lohit, that was a challenge indeed...How did you return from Mangalore to bangalore? Any update on Shiradi ghat
Abhi
Hi Abhi, am still in Mangalore wont be taking shiradi for sure. madikeri or mudigere is what am thinking off.

He he, we were planning of getting the MLA/MP of that area to drive a Maruti 800 with broken suspension on those stretches for around 10 times a day for a whole week.
BTW, I also traveled the same route on same day (1st Nov).
Gang,
Thanks a lot for your help and adequate information on the GOA-Bangalore route. Came back last night.
Took Bangalore-Tumkur-sirsi-mirjan-ankola-karwar-goa. Around 640 km. As rightly mentioned by kaushik few bad strected in NH4 and mirjan to ankola and then around Concana.
I took around 13 hours to reach with 1 hour break. Overall the drive was not that bad as expected. Though got stuck in traffic last night before yeshwantpur for 1 hour:).
I would suggest , if someone can start around 3 am in morning then Panjim can be reached easily by 4.00 pm and you will have a peaceful drive with very less traffic.
From Goa preferrebly start around 7.00 am and hit chitradurga road before evening to avoid the bad strectes.
Overall GOA trip was good, let's hope NH4 become little better for a pleasant drive :)

Nice update Nilotpal
Sad to say that Chitradurga - Haveri section is the only pathetic section in the entire NH4 from Chennai - Mumbai but I just fail to understand why there is this half contructed flyovers/roads in the same state since the last one year...Why is the Govt not initiating any work? THere was big advt when this congress govt took over saying that they are completing the NHAI GQ project faster than the previous BJP govt. but I cannot see any results...yet:Frustrati
Abhi
Yes guys now am in Blore, about 1600kms done burning about 5500 bucks of fuel. 300 kms of bad (Horrible) roads included:)
Enjoyed this trip very well, though the bad roads added some salt.
Am very happy with the following:
OHC: Great buld quality, Can take the worst roads
Bridgestone Turnaza: Afetr putting them in those horrible roads am fully satsified with them. can say they are one of the BEST*** tubless available.
@Kaushik i think those NHIA/Ministers/MLA/MP should be made to drive thier personal(the car which isw bought from theri money) might by CIvic's etc on these roads... every day!
Also did you spot any "Blue OHC" on Nov1? i think i spotted couple od Biege Balenos...
From Mangalore to Bangalore i used "Shiradi" route, turst me this road is "HORRRRRIIIIBLEE" after crossing this road i respect OHC a lot!
From BC road till the Madikeri junction and till Shiradi. Road is not in that great shape. Bad stretch at regular intervals.
Sad part is though the SHiradi is closed, hardly any work is happening there. Only one of the Hairpin is getting some work. at this rate dont know how many years they will take to complete the work. also no idea how well it would be done
Sad thing is though the Shiradi
@ Lohit, I did followed a OHC from Sagar to Jog as it was getting dark but it was brown colored one.
BTW, seems like Yeddy is the MLA from Shimoga, so may be we can expect the road to be repaired as he has became the CM. But also the other thought is if that was condition of road in his constituency then what will happen to Karnataka now:Shockked:
Kaushik, even i reached Sagar by 7 but halted at sagar itself.
About politicians there is no hope, majority of stretches has to be rebuilt completely. which requires lots of will. hi time people wake up and make these m,orons do thier job.
