I have read somewhere in the forum that some repair works have happened.

But if you are going from Bangalore, better stick to yellpur route as of today, or take haveri sirsi route

Did Bangalore Goa on 21-24 May 2009, took the Bangalore belgaun NH4 onward and then from there the much discredited NH4A Belgaum - Margao route. This route is the shortest and recently relaid. The road is good and can hold speeds of 100+ consistently. Only on nearing ponda the mining trafiic is high. This also takes only about 10 minutes to navigate since they are parked.

return did the Margao -Karvar- yellapur -hubli route. The road is good but there is a lot of small town crosings and traffic till we reach the Karvar-yellapur route. It is indeed very scenic but I felt this was longer. So my suggestion to anyone driving to North or south Goa take the NH4A, there is no scenery but much faster.

Me and some friends are planning to go to Goa some time in June. I am starting from Bangalore and have to go via Hassan because I have to pick a couple of friends there.

From Hassan I have identified the following routes.

1. Hassan-Mangalore-NH17 till Panaji
2. Hassan-Shimoga-Sagar-Honnavar-NH17
3. Hassan-Chikmagalur-Sringeri-Agumbe-Someshwara-Kundapura-NH17
4. Hassan-Shimoga-Sagar-Siddapura-Mirjan-NH17

I believe Route 1 would be the simplest but it will have heavy traffic. Personally I would like to take route 3, but I have already done that few times earlier.
I found route 4 on Maps of India. It shows a road from Siddapura to Mirjan. This road is in between the Jog-Honnavar road & Sirsi-Mirjan road.

Can anybody update on the condition of this road? If this is good, then I will take this road. I do not want to go upto Sirsi & take the Mirjan road.

Also how is the condition of the NH17 from Mangalore to Panaji?

I have chosen routes falling in the Malnad region because hopefully it would have started raining and atleast I might get a scenic drive

Yes, starting from Bangalore, but need to visit Dharwad.

If SH-34 is not in a good shape, then what's the recommended route for Dharwad-Goa (south) ?.

Thanks.

guys don't take any of the shortcuts to the road to ponda (like e.g. kittur - khanapur or dharwad - khanapur) unless you are driving a SUV/Jeep there are places where the road has disappeared after it has rained and there are huge craters - huge enough to make your car a see-saw Instead take the road that lies via belgaum.

cheers, and drive safe !

He was suggesting it to me

Has anyone one travelled on the Sagar-Siddapura-Mirjan-Karwar-Goa route? How is the condition of the Siddapura-Mirjan section? Both Maps of India and Google maps show this route

I did Shimoga - Goa via the Sagar - Honnavar - Karwar on May 9th. The road is very good and was a breeze to drive.

Ravibhat: Thanks for the road info.
