Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Will be leaving for goa on the upcoming weekend. We have planned to leave around 12:00 PM in the night. Wanted to enquire would it be safe to drive at night on this stretch of road and any other recommendations.
Also I'm attaching below the route I'm going to take from Hubbali - Chorla - Arpora. Suggest if you find anything wrong.

The railway over-bridge in Belgaum city is closed for traffic as of today (It is going to be replaced by a new bridge) so there have been major traffic jams reported in the city close to the railway line. Add 20 minutes more to the usual time.

While this route is fine, I would recommend Hubli-Dharwad-Aravatagi-Anmod-Mollem-Ponda route. The roads are good and much wider than Chorla ghats. Since you will hit the ghats only at night, this one will be an easier drive.
Just watch out for some humps near villages and a couple of railway crossings.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hello all,

What would be a better option for Varca-Bangalore - via Karwar and Mundgod OR via Anmod and Dharwad?

Take Dharwad-Anmod-Mollem. Decent roads. Karwar route is fine - but is very slow post Karwar with lot of traffic. It takes longer through Karwar especially since you are going to Varca.

Thanks! How is the 4-laning b/w Karwar and Ankola coming up? Is it too much of a pain?

I have taken this route last weekend to reach Calangute. About 1 - 2 km between Ponda and Panjim are not in good shape due to road widening / flyover construction.

One good news: GST effect - no more entry tax. Mollem entry tax collection booth is closed

Is this only for private vehicle or yellow board as well?

I believe it's for all vehicles, as I saw a note pasted on Mollem entry gate booth (which was closed) mentioning that entry tax collection is stopped from 30 June mid-night.

Thank you. Just yesterday we crossed and our 20 seater van guy collected 9K from us saying entry fee We were too tired that moment and didn't bother to check it. I will ask for a receipt today.

Tried both these routes on my Goa trip earlier this week - second one on the to journey and the first one on the fro. As someone pointed out earlier on this thread, both routes are good for South Goa.

The one via Karwar is more scenic, especially NH52 (Ankola-Yellapur), albeit slower due to multiple villages en route. Also, the Yellpur-Mundgod-Bankapur stretch has its share of bad/narrow roads, though small stretches.

Net-net, take the Dharwad-Anmod route if you are pressed for time and would want a no-nonsense route. Take the other one if you have time at your disposal.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Had been to Goa last week and took Anmod route. The roads are in very good condition all the way from Bangalore till Goa. There are few potholes near Dharwad railway gate on the way to Ramnagar however it is manageable even on the hatch with lesser GC. The route taken is as below

Started from Bangalore by 4:00 AM. Reached Hubli via Tumkur --> Chitradurga --> Ranebennur --> Haveri at 10:00 AM with two breaks in between.
Again started from Hubli at 3:00 PM after visiting my relatives house and lunch via Dharwad --> Ramnagar --> Anmod --> Mollem --> Corlim --> Panjim --> Vagator. Reached Vagator at around 10:00 PM with 5 to 6 breaks in between including a dinner break. The heavy rains reduced my speed to 10-20 kmph in the ghats as the visibility was almost nil.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

What are the recommended/COCO petrol pumps in and around Panjim ?

Also, is there road widening work in progress on the Karwar-Ankola stretch ?

Regarding bunk you can check out this one - Location

Have seen this bunk and looked descent, has entry towards both side of the road. Haven't used the same since I usually top up from Hubli which gives me range to cover Goa and get back to Hubli.

However, this bunk was suggested by HVK earlier. Hence quality should be good.

This IOCL is also one of the most preferred fuel stations in and around Panjim. You will notice that when you pass this side on your way to old Goa or return to Panjim.

Yes, this is in progress and continues to be. But then, this is not painful and easily manageable.
